Idea: A Scratch Podcast?

Would it work...

if Scratch made a podcast?

Here's my pitch:

It could talk about new ways to use blocks,

it could answer user questions,

it could interview users,

it could interview creators, and

it could talk about new releases.

I think it would really benefit our community.

Any other ideas?  It would be cool to have a new host each week.

Just some thoughts.  cool

Very interesting.

http://i52.tinypic.com/5es7t0.png I know what you're thinking! "Neptune! Get rid of those filthy advertisements and give us back the Zarathustra siggy, you horrible person!" Well, don't worry about it, the Zara siggy will be back soon, new and improved! ^^ Meanwhile, just do what the sig tells you to. >.>

Re: Idea: A Scratch Podcast?

gosox5555: I think it would be great to have a podcast!! Would you be interested in being the first Scratch podcaster?  You could post it on http://odeo.com/ or( some other site like that) If it gets good attention we could feature it on the front page to encourage others to work with you to create more.  I particularly like the interviews but I am not sure what is the best way of organizing that in terms of logistics.

Let us know if there is anything we can do to help.

Re: Idea: A Scratch Podcast?

I made a podcast email:

scratchpodcast@gmail.com

password: something

please, only use if you are the person who is making the podcast.

An Odeo account with the same info exists.

Now comes a few questions:

What is the timeframe?

Who else wants to host?

I assume we are going ahead with this.

I have recorded a pilot, to be online soon.

Re: Idea: A Scratch Podcast?

2 major problems:

Odeo no longer alows uploading, so for the interim I'm using a .Mac site I have.  I'll put the feed on the Odeo account.

Re: Idea: A Scratch Podcast?

Putting passwords on a public message board is a very bad practice.  That account is now probably useless.

Re: Idea: A Scratch Podcast?

Yes, I realized.  That's why I changed the password on the email.  It can be used for various things.  The odeo is now useless.

Re: Idea: A Scratch Podcast?

Sorry, I didn't know Odeo is not accepting uploads anymore. Maybe you could even use Scratch to host your podcasts.

Re: Idea: A Scratch Podcast?

I'll try that, but expect bad quality.

http://web.mac.com/gosox5555/Noahs_Show/The_Scratch_Podcast/Entries/2007/12/26_Scratch_Pilot.html

that's where you can find the pilot, as well as in a scratch project, coming soon.  I'll keep you all posted.

Post some feedback below!

Re: Idea: A Scratch Podcast?

I love it! Seems like the sound file is too big for Scratch to decompress. I looked at other alternatives and I found these ones:

Re: Idea: A Scratch Podcast?

The Scratch Podcast seems to work well when downloaded, but not in the java applet, which has limited memory.

Does the scratch player decompress all sounds at once or just as needed?  If it just does it as needed, then breaking up the sound into several one-minute sounds (sequenced with a series of "play sound and wait" blocks) could bypass the problem.

Personally, I prefer the forums to a podcast, because I can read about 5 times faster than people usually talk.  I can see how a podcast might be attractive for someone who was a slower reader or whose eyes were busy with some other task.

Re: Idea: A Scratch Podcast?

I think podcasts are popular because people can listen to them while not being able to read. For example while driving, walking, running, etc. I often listen to them on my phone while walking.
