I Have a Question About This Star Wars Box Set

I am a big fan of the first three Star Wars movies. As in the first ones that were made, episodes IV, V, VI. I've seen the special editions on Spike, and they are three of my favorite films. However, I want to see the original theatrical editions (the ones that came out in '77, '80, '83). Unfortunately, George Lucas has made this hard. I'm fine with him making changes to his films, but he should at least make the older versions readily available. Fortunately, there seems to be an option for it. Here it is: http://www.target.com/p/star-wars-trilo … tar%20wars

However, I've heard rumors that the original movies are not anamorphic. I'm not entirely sure; I know there were individual versions of these movies released in 2006 where the original versions aren't anamorphic and that could be what these people are talking about. This was released in 2008, so maybe it could be different.

If any of you know about this boxset, then could you please tell me if it is anamorphic?

Given that Star Wars is perfectly in the rules of the Things I'm Reading and Playing forum, there's no reason why it shouldn't be discussed here.

i think jukyter was trying to say that youd have a better chance of meeting somebody who owned the box set on a star wars forum than you would on scratch

That's a good idea. I just thought this might be a good idea.

My friend actually has DVD copies of the original versions. They are letterboxed, but that's just fine for me. He likes the special editions better anyway. One of these days I'm really planning on stealing those original versions. :P

I own the original versions, but unfortunately on VHS, so it's pan and scan. The VHS set can be found relatively easily, I got mine for $10.

I don't exactly know the value of the DVD box set, though, since it is out of print.

Maybe I'll just borrow my friend's copies and record them onto blank discs. >:D

How bad is it? I can take some black bars around the top, but I don't want a square in the middle of a screen.

The VHS isn't wide screen, it's a square. So two chunks are sliced off.

I just checked eBay and that DVD box set goes for around $100. :\ If you have that money, then go for it. Cheapest ones I found were $66.

The DVD box set is letterboxed. It's a rectangle in the middle of a screen. Trust me, though, it's not bad. I've watched those DVDs myself. It's better than nothing.

We might be refering to different things. I think you could be referring to the 2006 box set while I'm referring to a 2008 one.

What does your friend's box set look like? The one I'm talking about shows Luke and Darth Vader battling with a Darth Vader mask above it.

Yes, that's the one.

I really want an anamorphic version of the original trilogy, so I think I'll pass. I might have considered getting the VHS ones, but we no longer have a VHS player. Since there doesn't even seem to be an official version of the theatrical editions in print anyway, I'll download them and burn them on to a DVD.

I'll report this to be closed. Thank you very much for your help. Much appreciated!  smile

You should try for the VHS copies and get a VCR off of eBay, but I don't think you're that desperate. :P

I have something like four VCRs in my house (two individuals, two TV/VCR combos). I have a 13 inch TV in my room with a VCR so yay.
