Oh, wow. That just seems physics-breaking and unnatural to me—with LXDE and Windows XP, everything's down on the ground, where it belongs!

But in #! you can put it wherever you want  tongue

Then again, as of now it *is* on the bottom, and there isn't an application menu on it either. There's one in the right click menu though, or super+space  smile

Anyway, on topic:

Whatever they're counting down to (or apparently already did count down to ^^^ ) probably is the Ubuntu for Android thing. It's been quietly out on their website for quite some time now with a big orange "GET IN TOUCH!" button, and maybe some big manufacturer clicked it. Hope it's Toshiba because that's my tablet brand right now  tongue

It would be cool to install it on an android device, if it's possible.

I've got a spare android device I've been looking for something to do with, and this would be perfect.

If this device wasn't an ancient Motorola Backflip that can barely run Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), that is.  tongue

I remember you telling me about it  tongue

But potentially, this could run faster than Android since it runs native code, rather than Java which is notoriously slow.

That makes sense, but Canonical has already posted the minimum specs needed to run it, which is a dualcore (Cortex A9 and up) CPU, 1GB of RAM, and an 800x400 screen.

Which means that there is absolutely no way it would run on something with a single 528Mhz core (actually 768, I overclocked it) and 256MB of RAM.  sad

Though if the sourcecode isn't massive, I may get it and try to make something out of it.  tongue

Re: Ubuntu countdown - January 2nd

Do you have touchscreens? That makes a big difference, IMO. I like the idea for phones and tablets, but I like my desktop (the software one, not a physical one) on my keyboard/mouse/tracpad machines.

Thinking about it, both Apple and Microsoft made a big mistake in their most recent generations: they released a product before the required technology was widespread. Apple's retina displays were released without sufficient graphics power and without enough retina-supporting apps to be as good as it should be, while Microsoft released a touch OS before touchscreens had any major presence in Laptops and Desktops.

I think my link to the Engadget post was the last reply on the first page. Basically, it's an Ubuntu competitor to iOS and Android. Not a phone as stated above, but an operating system. (The demo Engadgget had was on a Galaxy Nexus, a Samsung/Android phone)

Not quite any android device, but most modern ones.

Well, yeah.  tongue

By 2014 (the intended release date) most of the market should have smartphones that meet these specs, though. Technology advances quickly and decreases in cost at the same rate  big_smile

Re: Ubuntu countdown - January 2nd

It doesn't seem to actually let you install it on your phone. You have to buy a phone with it preinstalled.
