Favorite/Least Favorite Video Game Genres?

Share your favorite and least favorite video game genres, and explain why.

I myself enjoy sandbox games. Why waste your money on one genre when you can theoretically have them all neatly wrapped up in one? And my least favorite would probably be FPS. I've never played one, but I don't plan on it either. It's nothing but violence, violence, blood, and violence. :c

Actually, maybe in a few years I'll pick up a copy of everyone's favorite teamwork-oriented fortress defender. Who knows.  tongue

Shooters.

Some are interesting and can be quite fun because they add new game play elements and aren't cluttered with blood and violence, but mostly it's just the same repetitiveness under a different label.

Re: Favorite/Least Favorite Video Game Genres?

favorite. 3D platformer. Got to love all the collecting.

hated. FPS dull repetitive lame. The only thing related to FPS games i like were the FPS moments in Banjo-Tooie. And Call of duty zombies.

Re: Favorite/Least Favorite Video Game Genres?

Favourite Strategy

This is coming from a big, big Portal 2 fan - but I love how expansive and clever strategy games can be. SimCity and Civilisation may seem simple, but skilled players know there's more beneath the hood. For all you know, managing stats and powers can seem dependent to the game - and lets not forget XCOM and Advance Wars. XCOM managed to make FPSes better by adding strategical elements to it, and Advance Wars had an RPG story but a true strategy experience. Yes, I do love platformers and action games - but strategy games are always unsung to me.

Least Favourite Puzzle

Portal 2 had one flaw; repetitiveness. Length didn't matter, gameplay did. It was more or less the same concept, get to the elevator. It's the same with other puzzle games, they are the same thing over and over. That's also the problem with FPS games, they have a concept that can't be wildly changed, so they have to disguise it. Good puzzle games succeed, but even they are at fault of repetitiveness. You may have a good concept, but to make it last a whole game with no repetitiveness is impossible for nearly all puzzle concepts.

Re: Favorite/Least Favorite Video Game Genres?

My favorite is probably either RPG, sandbox, or strategy. Sandbox because i don't always feel like doing the main mission and i like to mess around in games. Kill random things, blow up buildings, and there is driving. I love doing donuts or other stupid things in fast cars.

Least: Racing, or FPs. I love TF2, that's honestly the only fps that i like. Well i do like Zombies in Call of Duty, but i hate everything else in it. And racing games are just boring to me

Same here. I hate FPS games but i like Call of duty zombies. My computer can't run TF2 sadly. Also im too poor to be a pay 2 play member.

Yes! Because we are able to get informed opinions on something by mere assumptions and no actual experience!

My favorites are adventure games, RPG's, and platformers. I like most genres so I don't really have a least favorite.

Bronies. Not total weirdos, simply fans of the modern episodes of MLP due to a cheerful atmosphere and hidden adult humor. And there is my opinion on something I've never experienced. (Bronyhood.) Hah.  tongue

So anyway, I'm glad to see that I'm not the only hater on the gory side of games.  big_smile

Oh well, sorry to hear you'll never enjoy Heavy Rain (which is a masterpiece).

Gore is okay, depending on how it's used. I it's used all the time, then it is disliked. However, if it is used to strengthen an emotional or atmospheric feeling occasionally, then it's okay.

If you're going to dislike a game based off its violence you are going to miss out on some excellent gaming experiences. The same way that people not willing to see violent movies will miss out on many great films.

I know that. I thoroughly enjoyed the death of Boromir in The Fellowship of the Ring.

Look, I just think there are nicer things to do in games than murder. Is that so wrong?

reaching a goal over and over is not unique to puzzle games
it doesnt really count as "repetitive" when each level is completely different from the last
