If you visit the Ubuntu website, there's a countdown clock that says 'so close you can almost touch it' and counts down to 9 AM (EST) on January 2nd. What do you all think it might be counting down to?

Quantal was released two months ago.

Ubuntu release numbers are like so:
YY.MM
They're released biannually, YY.04 and YY.10, so the next release will be Raring Ringtail (13.04) in April.

I'm guessing this will be some sort of tablet.

I'm working on setting up Arch, but Ubuntu is generally seen as the flagship as it is one of the best supported/easiest to setup.

Agreed, but I don't like how it looks plus it's a bit slow on my computer, hence my use of Lubuntu.

I s'pose it would look bad if the most popular variety of Linux turned down a not-so-great path, though.

Similarly I hate Unity. I prefer GNOME, but KDE is beautiful. But yeah, what I'm saying is that Ubuntu is the bridge between somewhat tech-savvy people who are capable of installing another OS, but not necessarily enough to configure a more complex form of Linux, and they may only know of Ubuntu.

I like gnome's layout, and xkde is a good compositor too. Lxde is good, but I don't like the layout so much.

LXDE is pretty similar in look to Windows XP; that may be why I like it so much.

I don't see how Mint is bad, it's different than Ubuntu. It's been around since 2006 so obviously the code has been changed quite a bit.

The lack of the "application menu at top left" is one of the main reasons I hate Unity.

@slinger: I have it mostly set up, I just need to install a desktop environment then I'll be all set. tongue

Also, DANG, torrenting is nice. It downloaded the whole 500MB of Arch Linux in under half the time it would take to download over HTTP. I guess it's the difference between having one data stream (user to server) and having 60 data streams (user to seeders) that makes it really fast. (and no I wasn't pirating. tongue )
