Hello!

Hi everyone,
We got a Raspberry Pi yesterday and I'm very excited to find the pre-loaded SD card had Scratch, so I've been playing with that a little bit today. I'm particularly interested because we have 3 young boys and I'd love to get them into programming.
If anyone has any tips on where to start or some first projects to try, that would be great!

Now I'm off to look around the site a bit more.
:-)

Re: Hello!

Welcome! I would assume young like 10 and under so I think scratch would be really good for them to learn from. Are you familiar with scratch yourself? If so you can help them.

I would get them used to the basics of movement and that sort of thing. Them move on to more advanced things such as broadcasting and pen scripts. Then Variables, lists and booleans( think that's how you spell it). I could make some quick tutorials on them if you would like, but would have to be in Monday or Tuesday pacific.

For some starter games: Pong is always a pretty easy game to make, here is the link to my Pong game if they would like to look at scripts:  Pong game

Another good project is a drawing area using the pen scripts, being able to change colors is also plus. Once again here is a link to a pen project if you want to look at the scripts: Pen

If you or your children decide to use some of my scripts please give me some credit  smile

Re: Hello!

Thanks!

My boys are 8, 4 and 1. My 4yo is very bright and is very interested; he managed to get the cat to walk across the scereen and jump over a hat yesterday. :-)

I've never used scratch before so I'm going to be learning too, but playing around with it for a little while, I think it is just amazing. So neat for children, not having to do lots of typing and learning lots of syntax, having very immediate results from their work, etc.

I will be talking to my boys' schools about it!
