IMO, Wheatley was modeled on Dan Hardcastle, and then had his intelligence removed. Yes, I know that he Partnered after Portal 2 came out, but... shut up. Wibbly wobbley timey wimey.

Wheatley is a really awesome robot. He pretty much gave Portal2 life that the original Portal never had. In Portal1, you don't have much confrontation. GLaDOS says a couple things every once in a while, but for the most part, it's just silence. Now in Portal2, theres Wheatley, who gives a new, friendly atmosphere that takes away the loneliness you'd expect from Aperture Test Facility.
So, in essence, Wheatley was the most important character in Hom- I mean Portal2.

i personally prefer the lonely, isolated sense that the first game gives over the atmosphere generated by most of portal 2

You know, I made this topic and the Portal 2 topic - so I'm fine with conversations about Wheatley here. He is a pretty awesome character after all, and his voice actor narrated some recent Barclay's (british bank) commercials too!
