I always wonder what around 96.5%  of those accounts are for...I mean: It can't be spam accounts if they didn't comment.

Re: Stats on activity on main site vs. forums

I think the reason a small percentage of Scratchers are using the forums is because to internet newbies (like those who wouldn't understand LOL, which is basically me 3 years ago) don't know how nice and free this place is, and (IMO) they think the rules are strict and a small mistake could get them banned. That's how I used to feel before I came here.

There are lots of different stats available on stats.scratch.mit.edu, but they don't give a clear picture of how many accounts are active on which parts of the site. Paddle2See has been collecting some additional stats recently, so I thought I'd share some that I found interesting.

We only have two weeks worth of data so far. I averaged them to get per week values.

Total number of accounts used to create (comments or projects) on the main site: 19,023
Total number of accounts that posted on the forums: 680
Total number of accounts that posted in the Misc: 309

It was surprising to me that the number of accounts that posted in the forums was only 3.5% of the number of accounts that created a project or comment on Scratch. And the percentage that posted in the misc was only 1.6% compared to the total number of active accounts on the main site.

What do you think of these numbers? Were they as surprising to you as they were to me?

I don't understand why you can close Misc. 42% of all posts are in Misc. Paddle did the data incorrectly. There are many users who barely post on the forums. Yet 42% of posts go IN Misc. Before you close Misc., try figuring out the amount of posts from from users on Misc. and see how much of the posts are in Misc. Then it makes sense that Misc. is the most popular forum on Scratch!

Nobody is arguing that Misc isn't the most popular forum section on Scratch.  It is.  It is also the section (by far) that requires the most moderator and Scratch Team attention.  It takes more attention than all the other forum sections combined.  That's just too much attention for 300 actual users of an open-topic non-Scratch related discussion area.  We're hoping that by putting some additional restrictions on the topics being discussed, we can reduce the forum resources required to something more in-line with the population being served.

Re: Stats on activity on main site vs. forums

But it's very rare that someone uses accounts for more than one or two projects/comments only.
It's much more common to see someone post in misc then stay then post once and leave.

Re: Stats on activity on main site vs. forums

I had always wondered if there was a way to see how many active users there were. Thanks for these new number!  big_smile

It would be interesting to add a graph to the stats page.

Re: Stats on activity on main site vs. forums

Wow, but I'm not really surprised I've explored the forums and havn't see a huge variety of scratchers that post. I have only recently been posting on the forums, but the forums are never a popular thing on most sites I've been to.
