Spiderman gloves that allow you to stick to walls

Ok, my first attempt at webshooters didn't exactly go very well. I didn't get very far, mainly due to the problem of the elastic band being too thick (the plan was to basically have a miniature crossbow on my wrist, which fires a small hook attached to the end of a long and strong (hopefully) string). I do have another idea of how to do that, but since that could be quite expensive (the plan is to get the motors from a Rayven Nerf gun and use that to fire the string) I'm going to do something else first.

So, now I'm going to attempt to make gloves that allow the user to cling to walls (not inside, though; I'll explain why in a moment). I know that sounds ridiculous, but I know exactly how I'm going to do it, and it's been done before. Prototype This is the show that did it. It was actually a very simple concept, and not very expensive either. Basically, what they did was attach hundreds of little fish hooks to two wooden boards, which are what the person holds onto. These allowed the person to climb up a wall outside (since the wall needs to be rough, so it wouldn't work inside). I don't know exactly what it was - brick, concrete, whatever - but hopefully you get the idea of what I'm talking about.

So I'm going to try and do the same thing, kind of. But of course, because I'm an overly ambitious sort of person, I don't want two large wooden boards to hold onto. I want gloves. So to get around the fact that they're going to have a smaller surface area, I'm going to make smaller hooks. I'm going to try and make them as small as possible, therefore allowing more to fit on the gloves. I'm pretty certain this will be more effective than having large ones, because no matter what the size is, you still only have one point of contact per hook. So with more hooks, you'll get more points of contact. And I'm pretty sure the tips will hardly be any thinner.

So yeah, hopefully that will work...

I'll keep you updated.

hands are curved
gloves are curved because hands are curved
fishhooks might not attach to the wall because they might not actually touch the wall in lots of places

be careful

I don't know if i'm being crazy but aren't fishhooks sorta weak so wouldn't they bend  under a persons weight?

I just need to keep my hand flat against the wall.

I don't think so. The weight will be divided between all of them, so hopefully they'll be able to withstand the weight. But as I said, I'm making my own, so I'll try with several different materials to see which is works best.

Well, first of all, since they're hooks, you'll probably have to be able to hold your own weight.

I watched the show where this was actually done, too  big_smile  Wish you luck trying it yourself. Don't get too risky, though.

Thanks.  big_smile  I'll just try it on the outside of my house, and I won't go too high.  tongue

Re: Spiderman gloves that allow you to stick to walls

The hooks sticking you to walls thing is actually based on fly feet I think. The hooks would have to be pretty small, as in fractions of a millimeter, from my predictions, and you'd probably need a flat board that attaches to a glove via a hinge in order to hold a person's weight. Correct me if I'm terribly wrong.

I think you're thinking of a gecko. And the hooks wouldn't need to be that small (though maybe that would be ideal), since the ones used in the show I mentioned were normal fish hooks (though small ones), about an inch long, I think. But yeah, I think the smaller the hooks are, the better the grip, but I'm not entirely sure. The reason I think it should work is because, as I said, you can fit more on if they're smaller, so you have more contact points. And I'm pretty sure that's the important thing.

Also, I've decided to be a little bit more realistic, and first try it with an actual board first, rather than a glove. And then, if that works, I'll see if I can scale it done to a glove. My worry is, of course, that the gloves will have too small a surface area. But we'll see...

No, I think geckos have suction-cups on their feet.

No, they don't. They have many many ridges on their feet with incredibly tiny hairs all over them, which in turn have even smaller hairs on them. They're so small that they work on a molecular level to stick to surfaces (I can't remember exactly how it works, but I watched a documentary all about it).
