Here's a fun game.
Make a creative-with-cheats Water World superflat. Fly around until you find a village.
Now, set it to night, and you may only spawn the following items in:
A helmet:
No Helmet - Boss
Leather - Insane
Gold - Hard
Chain - Medium
Iron - Easy
Diamond - Noob
A sword, iron, stone or low-level enchanted wood (under L5).
Now, set it to Hard and see how long you go, and how many villagers you can save.

iron = needed for diamond. diamond = most powerful. emerald = trading! 
gold = Clocks and 15 durability tools. Probably gold.

The only thing xray is good for is redstone. That's what I use it for.
