What happened to it? I just noticed it was gone today. When and why did they remove it?

Probably because it didn't do much for the community and it allowed more space for other things. I personally have never clicked on a project which was in the surprise projects section, and I doubt anyone else did.

I don't know what our Friend's Recent Projects Area is gone—it was quite new.  hmm
The reason they got-rid-off Top Downloaded is because many Scratchers were cheating and saying that you needed to download their projects in-order for them to work properly.
Sometimes, it was true, sometimes it was now—so they got-rid-of-it.
I, personally, don't really care too much about Top Downloaded.
As for Surprise Projects, they took-up space on the front page—they are still around in the tabs, as The-Whiz stated.

I knew the Top Downlaoded and the Friend's projects were gone, I never really pay attention to the Surprise.
