One question: is there gonna be a closed beta before then?  Cause if not, what was the point of the "signup" project?

Yep. It's because they use completely different file formats; 1.4 simply isn't compatible. I bet someone will try and mod it to work, though.

Well, that's pretty awesome to hear. c: I personally can't wait to make the best out of the new features that will be introduced in 2.0 - perhaps contributing to squash some bugs in the process.
