This is my first motherboard replacement. The motherboard I have is a g31m-gs r2.0 asrock. When I power it on it starts the fans, then generally gets as far as the screen where it shows the f keys I can choose from before making a click and shutting off. sometimes it doesn't even get that far before shutting off. I have plugged in everything correctly (at least I think I have). I am not sure if there is a bios or how to install one. I have plugged in the ATA cd drive(with the included cd in it) and the SATA hard drive. If someone can help me please let me know. If you need more information, such as pictures of how I have it plugged in, please let me know.

Now, I'm no expert, but I have had a similar issue. My problem was with a Gateway notebook, and when I was gaming CPU temperatures were easily getting up to 80-90 degrees Celsius. At 90 degrees, the CPU triggered an automatic instant shutdown to avoid permanent damage to the CPU, which included a click.
However, without even booting the OS, the tee raptures shouldn't get that high... If that is the problem, either your cooling system isn't working or the on board thermometers are fried. Certainly don't try too much based on this, it isn't logical that opening the BIOS is enough to cause an overheat, wait for other opinions as well.

It sounds like the power supply isn't powerful enough for the hardware in the system.

I would need to know the specs of the system (including power supply wattage) to know for sure though.

(And if it shows anything on screen at all, you can know that it does have a BIOS on it.)

Well, I don't have a heatsync over the processor, I planned on adding that later but I fgured it would work without it for a while. I was goign to use the previous one but it doesn't fit. I can try holding it I guess, but I have no idea how to fix it.

Do you have a fan on it, even? Most of the ones i have seen attach to the heat sink. Is the area around the processor getting extremely hot? I think that may explain it, if the area is extremely hot you might want to avoid using it and get a cooling system ASAP. hmm

I am not usre how to ge tht evoltage of it, but holding the heatsync actually helps and it doesn't shut down.

When I press f6 the instant flash menu appears, and it checks my sata drive for bios files. It doesn't find any though.

Is there any way to isntall said file on this drive? I have a usb hard drive reader and a few macs I can use to install it.

Modern laptop and desktop CPUs require heatsinks. They put off massive amounts of heat.

You don't need to worry about the voltage, unless you are going to over- or under-clock it (which still will not get you around needing a heatsink).

If you get anything on screen at all, your computer has a BIOS. I doubt that a company would sell a motherboard without one, anyway.

I have a heatsync resting on top of it untill I get another one, and I just managed to install clear os. Thanks for all the help
