E-Mail frauds and urban legends...

Spam, fraud, hoax, they're all summed up in the word "fake." Share stories of e-mail chain letters and all your urban legend things here! (If there's a picture and it's scary, DON'T SHOW IT.)

I have developed an interest in frauds and such, as it's actually a very cool subject.

apart from the fact I ran into a few pictures that might lower my level of sleep...

Here's a famous one:

Subject: bill gates here

Hello everybody,
My name is Bill Gates. I have just written up an e-mail tracing program that traces everyone to whom this message is forwarded to. I am experimenting with this and I need your help. Forward this to everyone you know and if it reaches 1000 people everyone on the list will receive $1000 at my expense. Enjoy.
Your friend,
  Bill

I've heard of that.  tongue  People fall for the strangest things. 1,000 bucks is tempting, but seriously. Who would think that a famous guy would give off over a million dollars to complete strangers? Also, THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS E-MAIL TRACING.

NOW this is crazy. I don't have a crush, so it isn't possible. Ya won't die if you don't pass on an e-mail. Computers can't read minds. I won't get into the kissing stuff.

How about the story about the woman who were invited to live together for months at a time for a game show for a million dollars, but it was really an internet webcam prank by a couple of teenagers

Re: E-Mail frauds and urban legends...

Here's a story for ya:
I had an old Mac laying around and decided to get rid of it. That being, I put it up on Craigstlist and received an email the next day saying they were interested, but had to pay through a money order (Red flag!). I figured I'd continue to go on with the deal but be careful. They then said they sent the money and just minutes later they told me that his secretary accidentally sent me $900 rather than the actual amount. At this point, it smelled of fish, so I just ignore the email. Then the next day I got an email asking me to "please send $800 back since the item is only $100. However, you won't receive my money order for a few days since it takes time to process." and I figured that they were going to end up with $800 and I was never going to get the $900.  smile

I reported them to an internet crimes facility and that was that.

I hate the one's where it's like "YOU ARE THE 100,000 VISITOR TO THIS WEBSITE! Congrats! Now enter where you live, your phone number, your email, you full name, and if you have a tv!"

Or:

It's the name of an anime, and the alias (?) of the main character.  The anime is about an urban legend.

Post it, whatever it is. If I think it's too scary, then I'll ask you to delete it. (If I reported it a mod might get angry or something, so I stick with asking.)
