How do you make a server?

It's pretty simple actually  smile  You get a computer and install minecraft_server.jar / minecraft_server.exe on it. Run that in the same folder as a minecraft world and you're ready to go! Obviously you need to make sure a couple of other things are installed, like java. I used an old computer for my server and installed Linux Ubuntu on it - works a treat!

For full info on setting up a server check out Setting up a Server - Minecraft Wiki

You can also hire servers for a monthly fee from online companies, though you may have to be over 18 for that, I'm not sure!

You have enlightened me, sparks.  tongue

But really? It's that simple? Could it be done on, say, a Raspberry Piyikes

If it has java. :3
I prefer Ubuntu, though, due to the fact that the base OS takes up very little RAM.

Minimum system requirements for a minecraft server is 500MB of RAM for up to four players. Since the newer version of the Raspberry Pi (since October 15 2012) has 512MB RAM, it may just be possible to use it as a server. However, you'd have to run it on a system without a GUI and with an OS using no more than 15MB of RAM, which I don't know exists...

Since when?  I run a mc server with 256 MB of RAM (on Ubuntu, though,) and it works just fine.

Yeah, that's probably for LAN servers or something.

Re: Minecraft Official Topic

Speaking of raspberry pi, there's going to be a Pi-specific version of Minecraft called Minecraft Pi Edition. It's basically a port of Pocket Edition, but it's open source!

If you want something to do while Scratch is down, check out tbgs.tk! It's the new version of the (closed) Scratch TBGS, run by Scratchers! I'm going to spend most of my time there, anyway.

Re: Minecraft Official Topic

Raspberry pi would be able to do it, but it would lag quite a bit, since I have tried running a server on my ARM tablet, which has slightly higher specs than the Pi, but it took around 1 min just to generate the levels.

Also, how do you install mods?  I kinda want to install OptiFine.

Get magic launcher.
Click setup.
Click Add.
Select the optifine file(don't extract).
Enter account details(i use it, it's safe).
PROFIT!

There's also a more complicated way:
Download 7-zip or WinRAR, but you have to pay for WinRAR
Open the Optifine .zip file in 7zip/WinRAR
If you're on windows, go to windows explorer and type %appdata%/.minecraft/bin into the top. IDK on other OSes
Open the minecraft.jar file in a different 7z/RAR window.
Select everything from the Optifine window and drag it into the minecraft.jar window.
Delete META_INF from minecraft.jar
PROFIT!

And yeah, you can make your own skin from the orignal skin file.

It's easier on a Mac. You don't have to download anything but the mod.

1. Download Optifine from the official website using Safari.
2. In the "Downloads" tab in Safari, mouse over that folder named "Optifine xxx" and click "Show in Finder".
3. The Finder should have automatically make the .zip into a folder. Open the folder and copy all the class files.
4. Locate your "minecraft" folder. Inside "bin", delete "minecraft.zip" and rename the "minecraft.jar" to "minecraft.zip".
5. Paste the class files into this folder and delete META-INF.
6. Rename "minecraft.zip" back to "minecraft.jar" and test!

On Mac, the minecraft.jar even works as a folder, renamed to minecraft.jar.

Explain. If you want me to code something, I could, but it would be slow and simple.

I would like a mod that allows you to change which skinserver is used to display player skins.  The current one is:

We are! I'm building it on my friends server. And not to mention that server has mods.

Im mostly doing the interior and planning; My friends are going to build the planes, take care of the shops, and redstone. I'm just up to plan and stuff. And build.

And don't worry; I'm gonna take my time with the thing. Don't get angry at me if I post screenshots in like.... March.

WAYYYYYY too much DLC.
They took all the cool stuff and give it to the people who think wasting money on completely unnecessary things is a good idea. MCPVP is REALLY greedy.

Hey, maybe you can make a public server that you share on scratch! I really wanna play with you.
