and you can be inspired by religious books even if you aren't religious. maybe an atheist got the idea of having something in a book inspired by the qur'an.
so reasoning for christian authors being better being that you like books inspired by a holy book is terrible since anyone can be inspired by the bible!Wow, finally someone spells Qur'an correctly, rather than Koran! Oh, and for some reason i feel like that post was kind of insulting but i'm not sure why.... Besides, if an atheist (i think i'm thinking of the same thing as you) got inspiration from any holy book it might not be from the Qur'an, cause i haven't seen anything that would inspire a fictional story like LOTR or Chronicles of Narnia in it. Now maybe the Bible cause doesn't it have tons of stories and stuff? There would be a lot more to be inspired by in there with all of the stories rather than the Qur'an (unless they were writing a religious work but then again, why would an atheist write a religious work?)
I wasn't really specifying the Qu'ran, it was just an example. And it seems that when I write "Qu'ran" it says it's spelt wrong (underlines in red), but "Koran" doesn't get underlined.

i'm pretty sure both Koran and Qu'ran are acceptable

Well actually, Tolkien was best friends with C.S. Lewis. When C.S. wrote the Chronicles of Narnia, Tolkien hated the book and said that no author could mix up characters from different storyies into one book. They grew apart from each other over time.
I choose C.S. Lewis. Sorry Tolkien.

I don't understand what that means.

Oh, yeah I see.. >.>
I have a copy of the Silmarillion. I believe it was published after Tolkien had died, but I'm not sure.
Wow, that would sort of suck. I haven't read LOTR (YET!!!) but my sister watched the movie like 18 times in a row! It got so stupid! I mean it was cool at first but then she just wore it out, just like when she read the Hunger Games trilogy 6 times....

Yeah cause Qur'an is Arabic but Koran is English. But personally no matter what language it is spelled it should be spelled Qur'an.

Yeah but in Islam it is always spelled Qur'an and Koran is in English so that's why it is accepted. But i still think that it should always be spelled Qur'an.

I don't know, they were both good. I'd lean toward Lewis as my favorite, although Tolkien was a better storywriter.

Well Jesus is the English spelling of the name, yet everyone happily say it like that because we're English.

Very true. Few people call Him Yeshua anymore. (not sure if I spelled that right) I think we can call it the Koran if we want.

he said that no one could mix species from different mythology systems into one book
and they grew apart because lewis was a popular author by the time tolkien published his first book

I don't remember hearing him saying he hated it, but they were each other's biggest critiques.

Yeah, I guess.
Oh, and in Islam Jesus is called Isa. I've never heard of that other name for him... Besides Jesus is pretty much all anyone calls him nowadays.

I always think of fantasy as magic and stuff like mythology and science fiction like aliens and outer space-ish stuff.

It's the Hebrew translation of his name, which is what he and everyone else would have used at the time.

Science fiction isn't even necessarily "aliens and outer space-ish stuff". Since science fiction involves basing something on the sciences, there's also "soft" science fiction which deals with mostly social sciences.

Has anyone read Lewis's Space Trilogy? It changed my look on him and it was very good.

I've only read CS Lewis of the two and I really like his stuff so um yeah
Although, I'm planning to read some Tolkien in the near future, so I'll be able to make a more informed decision then

Personally I like Tolkien more, because whereas Lewis seems slightly aimed at children, anyone can enjoy Tolkien. It's timeless and its amazingly written.

whoever said tolkien was inspired by christianity is in a way right, but there is more wrong than right if you look at all his books.
tolkien was inspired by old european myths and legends. there might be some christian morals in there but it definitely wasn't his inspiration.
lord of the rings has some christian inspiration though, but that is the only one i can think of. and therefore saying that tolkien was a good writer because of his christian bonds is wrong.
shortly, tolkien was a good writer because of his talent, not because of his religion.
(but also whoever said that was right about gandalf and aslan)
Yes, Tolkien was not a great writer because of his religion, but I can think of quite a few other things parallel to cristianity.
