This is a long topic. Just warning you.
Okay, there's no denying it.
Eragon is the biggest rip-off of Star Wars you can ever come across.
I'm not talking about the rest of the Inheritance Cycle, I'm only ragging on the first book. And the movie, too, which is absolutely unspeakable. Anyways, you can definitely find similarities to Star Wars. In fact, the ENTIRE PLOT is ripped off from Star Wars.
And when I mean "Star Wars", I mean the first movie, and when I mean "the first movie", I DON'T mean The Phantom Menace, I'm talking about "A New Hope". I'm just a fanboy like that, okay?
So here's the throwdown:
Not only the plot ripped off, but the characters are too! Galbatorix is basically the emperor. He killed off all of the Jedi--I mean, "Dragon Riders"--who gave peace and prosperity to the world.
The book begins with a princess being captured by an evil sorcerer named Durza--who is Galbatorix's right hand man. Guess who this is? Darth Vader.
Before she is captured, she sends off a dragon egg someplace to carry out some mission. Basically, this dragon egg is involved in some big conspiracy for this evil empire.
The dragon egg is--believe it or not--R2-D2 and C-3PO. Why? Because they get into the hands of some random lonely farm boy whose parents are dead and living with his uncle, which propels him into a BRAVE NEW WORLD!
So this dragon egg gets into the hands of this farm boy named Luke--I mean, Eragon. Eragon is living with his uncle and cousin, Roran. His parents are dead or missing. He really wants to get away from his farm life and go on an adventure of sorts.
Same deal with Luke Skywalker, right? But wait, THERE'S MORE.
The dragon egg hatches and Eragon, well, gets a dragon. Hooray. But then...
Eragon meets an old village dude named Brom--who is, of course, Obi-Wan Kenobi! And then Galbatorix, who tracks the dragon down to Eragon's home, sends out his Stormtroopers--I mean, Ra'zacs--who raid his house, burn it down, and kill his uncle.
Luke's aunt and uncle were killed by Stormtroopers after they tracked down the droids. Copied, much?
So Eragon decides to go out on an adventure, gets a brand new lightsaber--oops, magical sword--called "Za'roc" (what kind of name is that?), and Brom tags along to teach him the ways of the Force--no, no, magic.
Along the way, they go to a city called Dras-Leona and infiltrate it to get revenge on the Ra'zac. But then, Brom dies! Oh noes. Okay then, original (a bit) there...
But then Eragon is all on his own and meets a dude named Murtagh, who is basically Han Solo. But then, they get captured and get sent to the Death Star--I mean, a random jail. Where he finds the elf Princess Leia--sorry, Arya, is imprisoned. And she was the same princess at the beginning of the book! So they break out of the prison and go on their way.
So now they're all going to go to the Varden, which is basically the Rebel Alliance, whose hidden base is located at Tronjheim, in the mountain called Farthen Dur, which is basically Yavin IV. So then, the Ra'zac and Durza all invade Farthen Dur, and there's a big battle, and Eragon and R2-D2--oops, his dragon called Saphira--lead it. And then there's a final battle with Durza, and Eragon vanquishes him and the Empire BLOWS UP. No, I'm kidding about that last part, but still.
So you see the similarities? You seriously can't argue, even if you're a fan of the book, that it's plot is directly ripped from Star Wars.

The title alone was enough to get my attention. Great job banana, some great new material.
Though now that you mention it, the plots are a bit TOO similar. Oddly enough, the plots diverge afterwards. If you want a REAL ripoff of Star Wars, I've got some news for you: Bomberman Hero. It isn't just a simple ripoff, either. It's literally the exact same movie, just with the characters of Bomberman inserted. The worst part? It isn't intended to be a parody.
Offtopic: I find that, strangely enough, Neue Deutsche Härte is good background material for reading fourms. Lol, I dunno.

Urgh, this is why i only read half of the first book.
I still maintain that it was really bad anyway

I managed (seriously) to read the entire book. It was only later that I realized how blatantly it copied Star Wars. I started reading Eldest a while ago, fell asleep about 20 pages in, and pretty much quit the Inheritance Cycle forever.

I never got the big hype over these stupid "dragons and mythology" books. I always thought they were lame.

Yeah, I read halfway through the first book, but then I got really confused so I stopped.

"Eragon is the biggest rip-off of Star Wars you can ever come across."
100% true.
"I'm not talking about the rest of the Inheritance Cycle"
Also 100% true.
My honest opinion is that the first book is completely horribly written as well, but the rest of the Cycle are quite good, with the final book being in my top 10 favourite books.

+ LoTR, but that isn't storyline so much as names.
Isengard? Hey lets make it Isenstar.
Arwen? Lets make it Arya.
Argorn? Better go with Eragon.
But I don't see that as that bad as the first book's copy of Star Wars. As I said above you can see where Paolini's writing skill starts to increase in Eldest.

I didn't notice until I read it somewhere. AND THEN IT ALL CAME TO ME.
