Best and Worst Comic Strips

Best and Worst Comic Strips! Here's my list

Best

Calvin and Hobbes - Well, obviously. This strip is absolute classic. It's imaginative, funny, in-depth, and touching. It has anything that anyone could ask for in a newspaper comic strip: great artwork, hilarious punchlines, and when there's a break from funnies, there's emotional and touching story arcs. Anybody who had a stuffed animal when they were little, or had a large imagination, can relate to this strip any day.

Peanuts - Very timeless strip that always remains in my heart. I remember getting my first Peanuts treasury for my seventh birthday, and I've loved it ever since. I love the cartoons, too.

The Far Side - THE funniest strip I've ever read. I haven't got every single strip, neither has the rest of the world, and (possibly) neither has Gary Larson. It's dark and satirical humor is just fantastic.

Bloom County - Great strip that examines our political culture in humorous ways.

Worst

Garfield - I'm sorry, I just can't stand this strip. It's unfunny, most of the time. It's just a bunch of talking heads--nothing more. It's every single modern-day comic strip, basically. Plus, with all the merchandising it has, it's hard to enjoy it nowadays.

Pearls Before Swine - Personally, I like this strip more than I hate it. It's very funny, I'll give you that. But what makes me hate it is that its art style is incredibly lackluster. Again, it's just talking heads. Ocassionally there's some movement, but other than that, well, nothing.

The Family Circus - This strip...just, ugh. It's not funny. The artwork is good, but the jokes are not. I used to think it was funny, but now when I read it, I just facepalm. Bil Keane is seriously running out of ideas here. How much longer can this strip go? I mean, it has to end now.

And there's my verdict. Post yours below!  big_smile

therefore you cant really criticize it for looking like it does
i dont think good artwork would improve the comic in any way

I enjoy the artwork's minimalism, it's just that the characters could use some more movement, you know? Like in Calvin and Hobbes, characters are defined by how they move, too. Movement conveys more expression that way.

Re: Best and Worst Comic Strips

Unfortunately, my paper cut a bunch of strips out. I do remember Mutts. That was really cute. Cul de Sac was good, but that one ended. Pearls Before Swine is really, quite entertaining. I look forward to that one the most every Sunday. ^^

Worst? Well, there are some strips I don't even read because my dad says their inappropriate. The Lockhorns, for instance. But as for the comic I truly hate, nay, despise...

Stone Soup. Oh goody, the millionth comic about family life. What's worse? Everyone has hair styles and big neon sweaters from the 90's. And the icing on the cake? It replaced Cul De Sac. Sure, Cul De Sac was about family life too but it was actually funny. The little girl was a bit of a preschool bully, and the brother just liked to sit in his room and read Little Nero. XD

Because I sort of 51% like and 49% hate it. The 49% comes from the lackluster artwork. The characters barely ever move, and that really takes away a lot of enjoyment. The 51% comes from the humor, because really, it's a funny strip.

Dilbert is awesome, and Calvin and Hobbes too. The best way to enjoy them both is getting the Dilbert books (hilarious, but sweary) and the Calvin and Hobbes collections (include some great extras; poems, unreleased comics, etc. etc.).

Dilbert is really funny. But I didn't put it on my list of Best because for me, it's sort of a neutral tie between good and bad. The bad comes from the lack of movement and expression from characters, which for me is a big plus in any comic strip.

Have you got any of Dilbert's business books? They're hilarious aside from the addition of some Dilbert strips.

Pearls Before Swine was not really intended to have characters moving.

Anyhow:

GOOD:
Calvin and Hobbes
Dilbert (old)
Garfield (old)
Pearls Before Swine
Big Nate
Foxtrot
And so many others...

50/50:
Garfield (new)
Dilbert (new)
Doonesbury
Crankshaft
Arlo and Janis
A couple others...

Comics that I HATE SOOOO MUCH that I want to rip up, burn, and send it to [censored for the younguns]:

You do know the author makes strips based on his lack of ability to draw? I've read in one of his comic strip books (My family gets comic strip books for road trips), him ridiculing his own drawing several times.
Don't look at the art, look at the sentences while glancing at the picture.
I've actually missed a couple jokes in other comic strips from not looking at the pictures close enough...

For best:
Cyanide & Happiness (kind of innappropriate, but rated 12+ on app store)
Pearls before Swine
Zits

Worst:
FAMILY CIRCUS - they reuse the same 20 jokes. It's just so annoying.
Baby Blues - the humor is kind of funny, but I don't like being reminded about how bad little brothers are...
Dilbert - I understand the jokes, but I have never lol'ed at one of the strips. I have about 15 of the books just sitting on bookshelves, but none seem really funny.
