ITopic: What is Necroposting? [guide]

Throughout the forums, I've seen a lot of scratchers, taking it upon themselves (, and not the mods), to tell a fellow (new-)scratcher if s/he necroposted. This isn't a bad thing, except that they almost always tell the (new-)scratcher, when the post is bad.

A lot of scratchers perceive necroposting as a bad thing, when it can be an entirely good thing. A necropost is a post that is posted on a topic that is about three months or older (mods, if you don't mind, correct me if I'm wrong). That it, nothing more, no descriptive words. It doesn't matter the content of the post, nor how much longer than 3 months ago the last post was. It's just a post on a topic that hasn't been discussed for over 3 months.

It can be a good thing, such as when someone is reviving a discussion that is still relevant to any part of Scratch (website, community, program, etc...). It can be a bad thing, when you spam, and bring up an old-irrelevant topic simultaneously.
What's worse is that most scratchers find either one, the good side or the bad side, to be a bad thing, and act upon it themselves, without having a mod's say in it.
In many cases, the so-called "bad" necropost is when someone had been directed to an older topic (because he duplicated said older topic), and posts in it because he had the topic before, and so he wants to revive it. Then next thing s/he knows, s/he's getting yelled at for no reason, which is bad  hmm  .

Another common case, it's when someone is posting on something that is old, but not three months old. It's just 1-2 months old, and his post is still relevant. Then, for just reviving a completely relevant and valid conversation, they get "yelled" at.
In just 5 minutes, I found three cases (if someone wants to take any of these down due to embarrassment, just ask):
Case 1
Case 2
Case 3

To read more on necroposting, go here

What I'm basically saying is, learn more about necroposting before you correct someone, and bring up the mods if you think you found a necropost, it's not good to do their jobs.

Case 3 is a proper necropost? the thread was over 5 years old...

It is a necropost, but it was a good case of necropost, since s/he was spamming, and to him/her, the topic was still relevant. And so instead of making a duplicate, s/he brought up the original thread.

Re: ITopic: What is Necroposting? [guide]

case 1 is only a necropost if you look at it from a certain point of view.
If you look at it, they're in the same month, and the post is kinda relevant, so it's open to interpretation

I put case 1 as an example of the post being called a necropost when it's not.

Re: ITopic: What is Necroposting? [guide]

Would the DT topic be a necro post? I posted on it 5 months later, but:

A) I'm the topic owner
B) It's still relevant

Why no? DragonThunder was a collaboration (I was part of it), and if he wants to necrobump it, that is completely okay, because it'll still be relevant, and it'll be reviving the topic.

It is considered a necropost, but it's a good necropost.

Re: ITopic: What is Necroposting? [guide]

Thanks for the guide!  I agree with it, for the most part.  However, I think the term "necropost" is only applied to posts that are on a dead topic AND the topic is no longer relevant.

I do think that some folks here are too quick to jump on anybody that posts on an older topic.  Please just report posts that you think are questionable and let the moderators handle it - if it needs to be handled at all.  In general, if the topic is still relevant, people are encouraged to post on it (rather than make a new topic) and it's not considered a necropost  smile

But it says, in a mod's post, over here, that necropost is when it's relevant or irrelevant. Is that just outdated?

Ok, i get what you mean.  In a broad sense, you could consider a necropost any bump of an old post, but the way most people understand it is that it is only a necropost if it doesn't add something worthwhile to the topic

Actually, most people consider it any post on a topic older than a month. Which is wrong, which is why I made this.

It's wrong if the person spambumps it up. Are you saying that it's okay to spam? Because that's what it seems like.

No. I'm saying, that from what I've seen, most users take necroposting to be any post, relevant or not, on a topic that is older than a month, and consider it a bad thing. When it can sometimes be a good thing (when the post is not spam, and the topic is still relevant).
