Or, what could I create with the Kinect itself?
I was gonna trade it for something on Craigslist, but no one wants it, so I may just break it up or something. Anyone got any ideas what to use it for?

If you are good at electronics, there's alot of interesting parts inside one, including a camera, IR lamp, IR camera, fan, and motorized base.
This guide could help you get it open without breaking anything, and also give you an idea of what is inside.
Even if you aren't great at electronics, you could make a portable fan with the fan inside, some wire, and 3 AA batteries.

An IR Lamp could be used creatively with a IR filter on a camera

This might take years to build...but: take all the parts, put 'em in a case, plug in some wires, and sell it as a "TOTALLY NOT BASED ON KINECT motion-sensor". Anyways, try to mess with the I/O cables and see if you make a little computer controlled lamp.

Here's an idea. The Kinect comes with a strong plastic outer shell. Dismantle this and assemble a rudimentary plastic pyramid out of the parts. Take the electronics that are inside, such as the camera and fan, and melt them down. Remember not to breathe in any noxious fumes! Now, mold the scorching-hot mess of metal and plastic into a small, round marble. Make sure to rid it of any imperfections! After you've finished this, use the marble to top your plastic pyramid. Congratulations! You've just created an impeccably trendy piece of art out of something that doesn't seem much like art at all. Celebrate this transformation by telling all of your friends and relatives what you've done with your Kinect. If it was a gift, feel free to tell the person who gave it to you- they'll be delighted!

you could take a big hammer and smash it into a ball and play catch with your friends

Don't dismantle it entirely, use the actual thing for some projects instead. The possibilities are endless - with some programming knowledge I guess.
It's relatively easy to use, from what I've heard, hence the wide array of projects made with it. I saw a pretty cool painting program kinda thing at an exposition - you used a stick to splash paint to a screen.
Hmm, I wonder how could one get it to work with Scratch. As in, what kind of blocks would make it easy to use. Has someone done a mod for that already?

Make a Disco light with the plastic shell of the kinect. the head woud be pointing at 45 degree angle then it should spin around electronically. Then there would be a small mirror coverd ball inside. tons of rainbow laser pointers would be inside refelcting off the ball. Best idea ever.

If I was a friend, I'd hate to be told my gift of a Kinect was smashed and crushed and melted into a little ball...
