Politics as a reason to get marked NFE

As a lot of you probably know, I uploaded a political project recently that got top viewed, and it generated a lot of strife in the comments.

So, I think that in order to keep this from happening on a large scale, political projects (if found by the ST) should get marked as NFE, so they don't get on the front page and cause lots of Scratchers to argue about it.

Anything that is to do with politics is going to cause debate. If it doesn't get out of hand, debate is good. Debate is possible without argument.

However, it invariably gets out of hand on this website.

It takes a real man to think up an idea because their own project is getting out of hand. I salute to you.

I support. That way, people can still enjoy the projects and comment.

A "Not For Everyone" status, for projects that are mildly inappropriate but not so bad that they need to be removed. It basically means that the project can never be on the front page.

Re: Politics as a reason to get marked NFE

Not quite sure; discussion on a topic seems okay as long as it's respectful, while flame wars are not.  How about mark it as NFE if it gets out of hand?

Re: Politics as a reason to get marked NFE

What about just being able to mark your own projects as nfe (or something similar) if you don't want them to get on the front page?

After the drama that arose, I wished I could do that.

While I agree that having control over whether your project can be front-paged might be a nice feature, you do have a form of control now.  You always have the option of taking it off the website by deleting it from your My Stuff area.  You also can disable comments on the project, if you are tired of dealing with them.

However, sometimes I still want my project to still be there, while I don't want it in the spotlight.

Re: Politics as a reason to get marked NFE

It can be very tempting to create a new rule each time something goes badly. It seems very simple: this thing happened that was bad, so if we make a rule to prevent things like it from happening in the future, bad things won't happen again.

And don't get me wrong - sometimes that approach makes sense. But it's usually best to wait a while, after the bad feelings have settled, and think it through carefully.

For one thing - we think people should be able to express their political views in projects  (respectfully, of course). It's an important part of how democracy works. Sometimes the discussions go bad and get disrespectful (and not just on Scratch - lots of places). That's definitely not a good thing. But as long as there's a reasonable chance that people will listen and learn from one another, we should be slow to block respectful political projects from the homepage, or anywhere else.

So even though there were some bad feelings surrounding the discussion on your recent project, I'm hesitant to NFE all political projects in the future. Instead, I hope that anyone who shares a political project in the future is careful to make sure the views shared are respectful to all, and that anyone who comments on political projects should return the favor. If the comments get spiteful, just flag them: that removes them and sends us a message so we can check them out and notify the authors when necessary.

I did that, but some people are now putting comments on my other projects.

You could (temporarialy) disable commenting on the other projects that they're commenting on  hmm
