the length display appears to floor, so any sound less that 1 second will be displayed as 0 seconds long. it will still work.

@DaSpence: What Wes64 says is true, but if the sound you import is much longer than 1 second but still goes to zero, then it's likely that Scratch has difficulty importing the sound. This bug has been known to happen with MP3's - if that is what is happening to you, then try converting the sound to an uncompressed WAV file and import the WAV file into Scratch.
