October 23 Apple Event (iPad mini, 13 in. Retina MacBook, Mac minis?)

Yes, another Apple event!
The tag line is 'We have a little more to show you.'
Probably the iPad mini coming out.
It's also rumored that new Mac minis and a 13 inch Retina MacBook could come out.

Discuss.

Re: October 23 Apple Event (iPad mini, 13 in. Retina MacBook, Mac minis?)

I'm now trying to make a pact to myself to NOT get a retina display (at least on a laptop).
Story time!
Just recently, we got a new computer that can play Minecraft pretty well, so I installed Optifine and put in some HD texture packs. Note that these are just 32*32 texture packs. When I switched back to 16*16, it looked awful. This is something being reported in some cases, and now I believe them. People who get so used to retina that they can't switch back to a normal resolution. I don't want that to happen to me, at least not until retina becomes the norm for all monitors. Why can't Apple make a great 1080p-compliant (or 1920*1200 to satisfy their desire for 16:10) IPS display?

Also if Apple fails to put in an NVIDIA GPU the 13" version is sure to fail. Intel's new integrated graphics are good, but not good enough for obscene retina resolutions (another problem rMBP users are reporting)

Re: October 23 Apple Event (iPad mini, 13 in. Retina MacBook, Mac minis?)

This event sounds really dumb to me, actually.

First off, iPad mini? Come on. I already have a perfectly good iPad 3 (which I happen to be using to write this post). If you want an "iPad mini", the best choice for you is a Nexus 7. But if you don't already have an iPad, then by all means, go ahead and buy the Mini. Just saying, the regular iPads are tons better.

Also, 13 inch Macbook Pro with retina display? That's not even that big of a deal--it's just another excuse for Apple to say "Hurr durr we gots another overpriced laptop, all you idiots who worship us should line up at teh Apple Store should throw a few thousand more dollars at us just because". Plus, I've seen the retina display on the 11 inch one--it's not that big of a step from a regular Pro.

Also, new Mac mini? Pfft. What's wrong with the current one?

Just saying, I think Apple's just trying to get their worshippers to throw away a few thousand dollars over nothing. And, please, no flaming me now, because a flame war is the last thing I want to start.

Yes, the Nexus 7 is the best choice, but that means that they aren't giving Apple their money. Apple wants their money.

I'm going to assume you mean 15 inch, not 11 inch. The retina display has its faults, such as not having many retina-prepared apps. Still, this is the MacBook PRO. PROFESSIONAL. People who might want to be able to edit video in full 1080p while still seeing their controls and having almost perfect color quality. It is NOT a consumer MacBook. You might as well say the Mac Pro is way too expensive - it is not designed for you. End of story.

Also, new Mac mini? Pfft. What's wrong with the current one?
What's wrong with the current one? Maybe that Apple updated almost allof their other products to the newest Intel architecture (Ivy Bridge, 3rd generation), but the Mac Mini is still using Sandy Bridge (2nd generation)?

Is this sarcasm? Because saying "Hurr durr we gots another overpriced laptop, all you idiots who worship us should line up at teh Apple Store should throw a few thousand more dollars at us just because"sounds pretty provocative.

Yes, let's never make computers better because they're obviously as good as ever needed

I guess a good thing is that the iPad 2 (if they still sell it) is less, so maybe I can actually afford one now.

Well, the regular iPads are of course going to better, since my prediction is that the Mini will have slightly lesser power, at a (hopefully) reasonable price, such as maybe $199, to have proper competition with things like the Kindle Fire HD and the Nexus 7. I don't know the exact specs of the iPad mini yet, though, so I guess I'll find out then to make a proper judgement on it.

I never said never make computers better, it's just that Apple should give its products a little more time to sink in. They come out with a new generation pretty much every year, it's like "Hey, I just got an iPod touch, wow this is cool!", and then a year later, a new generation comes out that's tons better, and you're all mad at yourself.

Plus guys, please don't be starting long arguments now. I was just expressing my honest opinion.

Yes, that's true. Also, the iPad mini will provide some fair competition for the Kindle Fire HD and Nexus 7.

I never said the Macbook Pro was a bad laptop, by all means, it is not. It is a fantastic laptop, in all areas. And, yes, its not exactly only a consumer laptop, you can do some very productive things on it, such as using iWork, Final Cut Pro X, Adobe CS6. I was only saying that Apple adds not too many changes to the next generations of some of their products. Yes, the Macbook Pro has retina display. Yes, it has a slimmer form factor. Yes, it has faster processors and graphics. But you see, this new 13 inch Macbook, is just, well, smaller. Not that big of a step, if you ask me.

Ah, okay. Thanks for clearing that up for me. You're right, I was being a little light-minded when I said that.  smile

By no means was I being sarcastic or provocative. I was saying very specifically, please don't start any arguments. I agree with you that what I said may have sounded a little bit provocative, and contradictions from others are just fine, as long as it doesn't go too long and extreme.
