Re: good free music making program

Hmm, can't think of any free ones, actually. A paid one is FruityLoops Studio, but that's not free.

noteflight actually lets you compose your own scores, and the limited experience I've had I enjoyed it a lot. It has lots of instruments and options. (for example guitar gives you the options of writing notes, chords, or tabs in sounds like a classical guitar, steel string acoustic, electric, etc.)

Musescore requires getting used to, but its a really great progr. Except the audio export isn't the best.

Re: good free music making program

MIDI/sheet/tab composition:
TuxGuitar
MuseScore

Audio Editor:
Audacity (latest version supports VSTs - useful if you're recording rock/derivates)

Trackers:
FamiTracker (8-bit NES music)

VSTs:
3rd Bass and FreeAmp 3. Bass and guitar amp+multieffects respectively

DAWs:
Linux MultiMedia Studio (I don't use it, I honestly don't know whether to recommend it)

Re: good free music making program

Definitely Tux Guitar. It's great for anyone who knows the basics of guitar playing, and chords, and provides plenty of tools to work with, including multiple tracks. It also has built in tablature support.
