Scratch 2.0: 4 new features

Here's the latest blog post on Scratch 2.0:

http://blog.scratch.mit.edu/2012/10/scr … tures.html

It gives information on 4 new features of Scratch 2.0: cloud data, a new user ID block, time blocks (current () and days since 2000), and running a script without screen refresh.

What do you think of these? Check out the post, then join the discussion on this thread!

Note that more information about these and other features can be found on the Scratch Wiki.

Re: Scratch 2.0: 4 new features

I think they should change the 'days since 2000' block so there are different years to pick from. That would be cool.

This is what I've suggested on the alpha site, along with scimonster, I believe.  smile

Re: Scratch 2.0: 4 new features

When can we have a "IP" or "Username" block? User ID block is somewhat useful, but still....

IPs shouldn't be given out online (I don't remember exactly why), and if they had username, I could do something like this:
If (Username)="mythbusteranimator"
Say "You actually asked for the username block? YOU FAIL!!!" //I didn't really mean that, just an example.

And be mean to certain people.

When other Scratchers “look inside” your project, they can edit cloud variables’ data (but only temporarily)

I'm not exactly sure I understand.  Will they be able to edit the values on the server, or will their changes only take effect on their computer?  Implementations of this may create loopholes that destroy the integrity of cloud data; after all, you can just set a "you win" variable to true, or cheat your score before the project uploads it, etc.

Any updates on when the people who signed up on the project can test it?

Re: Scratch 2.0: 4 new features

full:
so is there a limit on cloud variables, as I'm thinking of using a lot for my city game with different factors and tiles? also, i'm guessing lists can't be stored online and so unless I store each tile for a city in individual variables, there will be no online viewer for players exploring each other's cities.

brief:
1. will there be a limit on cloud storage?
2. can lists be 'clouded'?

Sweet! Replace the user ID with username and allow for deletion of the project if it doesn't allow certain people in or insults them.

Re: Scratch 2.0: 4 new features

cool

i dont like the idea that users could peek inside a project and affect the cloud data. this could lead to unintended performance issues. only the owner of the project should be able to edit the cloud data in the project editor

An IP blok will never come, IPs allow for tracing, and unless you want Joe in his mom's basement stocking you, it's a bad idea.

Sad...me likes all these features, and we'll have to wait until we're allowed access to it? Sigh...

Haha, I have a hard time with patience myself sometimes. Not much you can do though.
