Because it's based off the word googol, a very big number which is 10 to the power of 100, 10 times itself 100 times. But really, if they wanted the name to be a big number, they'd have made the name Googleplex, based off googolplex, which is googol times itself 100 times.
Why did the guy who made the number googol name it googol?
