I recently read an article about a Skype "ransomeware" virus.
Basically, if infected, it locks you out of your computer and makes you pay $200 to get your files back (and I'm not sure if it even gives you your files back after that ), and then sends it to all of your contacts on Skype.
If you get a message like this:
Lol this is your profile pic?
http://goo.gl/something
then tell the real owner of that account that they need to get their computer fixed immediately and DO NOT CLICK THE LINK. If you do, then what I described above will happen to you.
For more information, see this cnet article

Is there any reason they should actually give you anything back? It's hackers with an anonymous identity what we're talking about, here.
That sounds awful, indeed.

Nah, my files are backed up :3
Plus, deleting Mac users' files wouldn't make sense, they're all backed up with Time Machine

It's to illustrate how Time Machine saves backups of how the system looked like every hour so you rarely lose any work that you do, and you can revert system if you ever have a problem (which is rarely).

john hodgman ;o
but anyway uhh why don't the viruses just delete the time machine backups
Offline
Because the backups are on a different disk. -.-
Offline
but if the disk is connected, why can't it get at them

Same reason why files are usually safe if you make a different partition for them rather than put them all on C:\\, the virus makers aren't that smart I guess, or maybe there's a technical limitation (not likely).
OR maybe virus makers have hearts too o.o

really? wow
i wouldn't know as i've never needed to know about viruses really, seeing as i've never gotten one ^O^
Offline
Well well well. I wish that were the case for me. My heart is scarred for life </3
Nah, not really, but it is very surprising that you've never gotten a virus

why, should i have?
well yeah probably
considering i usually use windows xp and have used IE6 in the far past
though i do have like avg and whatever
i guess i just don't do dumb things?

You mean like clicking win iPad ads?
