I tried GIMP and Inkscape a couple times. I think Paint.NET is a lot simpler, more intuitive, and easier to use than both of them.

But that's just, like, my opinion, man.

Good choice!

Try the Windows > Single Window Mode interface, which bundles Gimp into one neat window rather than a lot of windows. You must have Gimp 2.8+ to use this feature  smile

I think if you're planning to do art a lot then SAI is good, though GIMP is still OK if you're short on money and you should get it anyway since SAI doesn't have transparency. If you're just going to do some art and you're mostly planning on photomanipulation you should just get GIMP.
