Lightnin and I have been briefly talking about Scratch video tutorials. Video tutorials seem to be the best way to teach many concepts - they allow for all sorts of learning; visual, audible and kinesthetic learning (try it out while listening to the tutorial). These tutorials could be really beneficial to new members and older ones who want to learn some new concepts. However, a few things make it hard, these are things we need to overcome:
1. The Scratch Team doesn't want to post videos on their website made by all Scratchers, they'd rather have videos organized in a community page.
2. Some videos will be more informative and fun (better) than others; posting them all on a page could be confusing.
3. Some content on the video may not be correct; allowing everyone to add their videos could be tough.
Lightnin suggests a "way to organize and find community contributed vids.", I think this is a great idea! I'd like to collaborate with some big Wikians to solve this problem, as they are knowledgeable about the community and the advanced aspects of how Scratch works. If you are a Wikian who would like to spend some time brainstorming and helping this project, please feel free join in the conversation, and let me know if you'd like to officially be part of this project.

Now, I'm thinking a community would be better; we can't be doing all the videos (although I'd love to do a few) and other people may have some good ideas for videos. We want to limit videos to tutorials that are facts; like a tutorial on variables, rather than a tutorial on how to get famous on Scratch, but it's okay to have different views; tutorials can say suggest that you always clean your scripts before uploading, even though that isn't a fact.
Now's the issue on where it's hosted; should it be on the Scratch website where it's easily accessible but has to fit in? Or should we open a new website and get official support from the Scratch Team? I'd like to know how willing the team is to let us host this as a page on their website.
Now let the conversation begin!
People officially helping (list shown above) can collaborate, comment and see this project's workspace (ideas, thoughts, images) by requesting access here after letting me know what email you requested access from here (don't share your whole email)

I'm assuming by wikian you mean a wiki editor? . And I would love to help, I mostly know how scratch works and am pretty knowledgeable about the site. I'm not a wiki editor or anything, though . Definitely sounds like a cool idea! Just seeing this, I already have some ideas...

I don't really want to be an official helper, but I have a few ideas.
You have a separate website but it's connected to the Scratch Home page (like the wiki) There'll be a top space in which there'll be several categories
home | videos [V] | about | my videos
the videos, when clicked on will branch out three (maybe more) categories:
new videos
marked videos
example
new videos are going to be videos that are new (like the newest projects) where every few hours they are bumped off
marked videos have specific tags that a lot of people agreed with, but hasn't been approved by someone operating the sight
example videos are videos that are selected from the marked videos by a website moderator, and the video would go under a category in the example videos homepage.
The tags will be pre made and will be used with a checkbox input. Next to the video (that I'm assuming would look a lot like projects here with Title, notes, and comments) there'll be a tags drop down in which someone could tag it with whatever tag they feel is fitting, but not a custom tag. That's going to be the use for seeing where it goes into marked videos.
This way, anyone can contribute, and there will be a place where all the good videos go.
I know I didn't explain this very good, please ask if you want me to elaborate on some part of this.

Thanks for he ideas! They'll definitely be taken into consideration.

Maybe it could be sort of like the wiki, where you have to sign up and be approved, but there would be requirements so that new scratchers who are inexperienced can't post useless/spam videos. Maybe it could require a scratcher rank and manual approval to be a video creator? Just a random though.

i'd definitely like to work on such a project; i agree that it'd be a great way for us to teach new users about scratch 2.0 and i will commit to helping with whatever you need me to as long as i have it within my ability (and i don't have too much work to do D":)
i think this would be great as a subdomain (perhaps something like tutorials.scratch.mit.edu but that's kinda dumb maybe something else) with its own site connected to a scratch account for adding videos (like scratch resources). i think the videos should have to be hosted on youtube or vimeo though (with the user choosing which one they use) to save space as well as have a universal player. a user would submit a link to a video, give it tags (or perhaps "category"s) and a description and it would appear on a page similar to that of the 2.0 project page. videos could also be commented upon.
i think another integral thing would be linking to these videos from any relevant wiki articles, so that they're easy to find.
also perhaps there should be some sort of approval process like scratch resources
basically what i think is like scratch resources crossed with scratch 2.0's site

Awesome - I'll add you to the list!
I'm with you on the Youtube part; videos should be embedded. However, what do you think about the quality of videos? Should there be high standards? Ones that would cause us to deny some videos?

This is a cool idea stevetheipad! If there's anything I can help with, feel free to ask.

Hey - this seems like an interesting thing to get involved in!
I am a true Wiki editor, with over 300 edits about hundreds of topics.
I might be able to give some vids, but not a lot.
Though, if I was brought into this collab, I would work on getting people to join. Right now, the scratch resources seems to be dying. I would not let this happen with this website. If our site is slowing down, I will host a survey and create a thread here on scratch linking to the survey.
So yeah, I would be the advertiser.
Thanks

Well, if you'd like to join in and help with brainstorming and eventually implementing the ideas, you're welcome to.
Also, added Google Docs link.

i think there should be some sort of quality standard, though not necessarily too high. i think that the speaker in the video (if there is one) should be audible and comprehensible. i also feel like the video should actually be teaching something; for example a video on how to use the (current [ v]) and (user id) blocks, along with cloud lists, to make a high score board for a game as opposed to a video that shows how to make 3D block art in the palette (which is cool but not really relevant). i'm not sure what else the quality could be graded on, except perhaps the actual video quality (like HD or what) but i don't think that really matters too much as long as you can actually tell what things are (so like maybe 480p or whatever it is minimum). is there anything else you were thinking of (besides obvious things like obscene language, etc.)
also i think that there could be separate sections/categories of the site for videos in different languages.
oh and i am flowers

If possible, maybe instead of using Youtube or something, we could use the HTML5 <VIDEO> tag. I don't know where'd you host the video files though. It would also allow users to download them for offline use at schools.

we were discussing adding vimeo as an option as well as youtube, which would be supported by more browsers and offer downloads.
it would definitely be great to do html5 video but the hosting would be a huge issue

the scratch team are no longer offering hosting for new things on scratchr.org

Your welcome to see it and add comments, along with kayybee. However, we're going to wait and see when/if/who he want to add to the official team.

Oh, I didn't realize that.

I think making video tutorials for 2.0 would be fun. I'd love to join the team

Added...I've been preoccupied with other things and forgot about this. Time to work on it, I'll be on the Google doc for a while.
