GIMP tutorial?

Yes, don't blame me.  I just downloaded it literally 15 minutes ago.  And the ones on gimp.com don't help.  What I specifically want is how to do the blur effect in the Gimping Cars thread.  Does anyone know a site that can help me?

Ok, can you choose a car image, or show me the one you're using?  smile

How about editing my sig?  I want to make the blast more blurry.  And I'm too lazy to upload my own pictures.

Re: GIMP tutorial?

Well, that's going to be hard without blurring other things too. Can you just choose a car from Google images or imgur or something?  tongue

Re: GIMP tutorial?

The image resolution is a little low, plus I don't see any wheels to blur xD
Can we use this one?

I'll show you how to blur the wheels, glare the headlights, add a new background and some other tweaks.

No thanks  smile

Start by dragging the image to your desktop, the right click it and choose Open with > Gimp. This will open the image in Gimp ready for editing.

Re: GIMP tutorial?

Sure.

EDIT: The first thing we're going to do, is we're going to separate the car from its background. To do this, choose the tool on the toolbar that looks like scissors.

PS. You can use the Windows > Single window mode to turn the UI into a more easy to use interface.

Ok.  Can you post about 3 - 5 instructions at once?

Re: GIMP tutorial?

Are you sure about this? This is the most difficult bit. After choosing the scissor tool, click on the edge of the car, where it meets the background, then drag your mouse multiple times and make sure the 'marching ants' lines keep to the border of the car. You can drag the line to define it more as well. Once you've gone all the way round, click on your original dot again, then hit enter.

Ok, I have to go soon.  Post the rest of the instructions and I can walk through them.

Re: GIMP tutorial?

Once you've selected the car using the previous steps, choose Select > Float.

Then go to the Layers dialog (you can open it if it's not opened yet using ctrl+L.

Click the new layer icon. This saves the floated selection as a new layer.

Now you can set about blurring the wheels. Use the scissor tool again to select one of the wheels. Then use the Blur > Motion blur > Radial and change the settings so that the wheel looks properly blurred. Make sure the blur centre is at the centre of the wheel. Do the same with the other wheel.

Re: GIMP tutorial?

Now blur the background. Choose the background layer without the car one it, then choose Filter > Motion blur > Linear and choose the largest number. Customise the angle.

You should have a motion blurred background now.

Now just add some lens flares to the lights, and you're done.

Re: GIMP tutorial?

The only other thing you could do, is tweak the colours and contrast a bit. Use the Hue-Saturation, and the Brightness-Contrast tools in the Color menu to tweak them.
