Re: Pirating - your opinions?

oh i can, but i've never had to

you see my mom works at a school and they've often had computers in the past they weren't using and so i've been allowed to use them though i think that we might be keeping this one permanently (perhaps buying it from the school) because we've made several hardware modifications (like adding another hard drive, completely changing out the disk drives, adding RAM, etc.) and it'd be some work to try and recreate the computer on another machine as well as it'd take a while to wipe it even with cloning because i've got partitions and a modified bootloader and stuff and it's not exactly super easy to modify those with windows xp, y'know?

Why would you wanna pirate it if you already own it

Actually, I would use it if the original was broken, unavailable, or if it was in the wrong format. For example, if I had an album on cassette tape, I could pirate a digital version of it, legally. If I had a OSX Snow Leopard DVD, I could pirate an iso image of Snow Leopard designed to be used with Hackint0shes.

couldn't you just rip the tape
and couldn't you just make an iso from the dvd

Re: Pirating - your opinions?

There are iso images that are specially modified to be installed on Hackint0shes.

Plus, I don't have a tape ripper, and can't be bothered to do it with a output/input thing.

Re: Pirating - your opinions?

there's no such thing that i know of as a tape ripper, it's always just 1/8" jacks i believe
i think that if you have tapes or records then you have no right to pirate that item digitally, because you own that copy of the music with its imperfections and technological shortcomings and a tape rip would actually reflect the item you actually own
i think it's immoral if you have the means but are just too lazy to

Re: Pirating - your opinions?

Most people think of me as a pirate since I get music from online sites (Yes, even scratch) and dont pay on iTunes or whatever. Though I do know that pirating only becomes serious if you try to sell pirated music. I dont pirate anything (Like video games, programs, etc.) becuase thats way more serious and prices for games ae good at Gamestop and so on. So yeah, I'm a pirater.

uhhh
i would disagree that it's only serious if you try and sell pirated music, and that video games/programs is more serious... it just depends on the price of what you're pirating

True, true, pirating is a pretty debatable topic.

I never pirate anything, if I can't afford it, then I can't afford it dang it!

A better term than anything is "something I can buy or rent"

It's not pirating if it's for educational use.

This implies that I can legally purchase something, than use parts of it in things like commentary (book reviews with excerpts, let's plays), parodies (Weird Al, Galaxy Quest), etc.
It allows you to use parts of the work without permission, but you still can't just not pay for it.

So putting music I own in a Scratch project should be legal as it has an educational and non-profit purpose.
Putting music I don't own in a Scratch project is not.
This may be debatable though, as the Scratch project can be easily downloaded and have the song taken from it.

If you put music that you don't own, it's also for an educational and non-profit purpose. You'll never get money with a Scratch project. But I agree with the download part, even though the quality of the music wouldn't be the same...

Re: Pirating - your opinions?

I downloaded $4,000 USD of music at $.99 a song for free.

It was my collection of legally-bought discs that I was too lazy to rip.

I'd assume that's not wrong.

I also pirated Portal 1 and Half-Life, because I had Orange Box for PS3, but it got a shock treatment from a thunderstorm.
