They have more than enough money anyway though. But they wouldn't if people weren't buying their work.
If enough people with your mindset start saying how a certain artist is so filthy rich that you should just pirate them, less and less people obtain their music legally. So if you have plenty of people spreading this idea, eventually the money spent on creating the work does not get earned back or become profitable.
Movies incur loss all the time. There'll always be people who buy it legally though, either because they believe it's the right thing to do or because they're so terrible with computers they can't pirate stuff (like my parents). If they want me to buy their music, they should start doing stuff like giving their money to charity, not keep it all to themselves
Yeah, but with the main purchases of music turning digital and computers becoming more common and understood, this won't always be true. By now there are enough people who understand how to pirate that growing piracy COULD stop things from turning enough profit.
Also, do you look up everyone you buy anything from to see if they should get your money for being charitable?
And if you were rich, you may donate to charity, but I think it goes without saying you would keep enough to still live in luxury.

If you want to donate money to charity do it yourself, don't give some corporation your money and expect it to go anywhere but their CEO's wallets.
Offline
Many non-for-profit organisations ask for donations, then place it in their own pockets and call it a 'wage'.
Back on topic?
I think that as things get ever more digitalised, more things will be 'pirateable' and therefore, more things will be available worldwide for free. I can think of upsides as well as downsides for this. If it stays illegal though (which it will), I'm staying no part of it

Donate all your money to Invisible Children.

Well, there's the stealing, pillaging, and... some other stuff. Also just tons of scurvy, forever.
Also, just because a charity has a high overhead doesn't mean they're a scam. I don't know about Invisible Children, but just because charities pay themselves too doesn't mean they're bad - they need to spend money to make money.

Yea, I guess scurvy is one of the disadvantages... I'll have to think about it

Pirating isn't stealing, nobody's losing anything, but the pirate is gaining something, which seems good. That's assuming that they wouldn't otherwise have payed for it I guess.
And imagine a pirate told there friends how good it was, and lots of the bought it, then the people selling it would get money because of someone pirating it.
What about the company that is selling the product? You don't think they lost a sale?
So telling ones friends justifies the fact that he pirated?
I'm not saying I've never pirated before, I am ashamed to say I have (I have deleted everything I've pirated though :p). I personally don't think pirating is the right thing to do. Not only does it hurt the sales of the company selling the product but a soon as you do it once you are more prone to do it again.

So, if you're pirating to try out the software before you buy it, is that alright? It may actually give you a better chance to buy the software. For an example, I tried minecraft cracked to see if I liked it. I LOVED it, so I decided to buy it. If I wouldn't have gotten it cracked, I wouldn't have known I liked it.
I agree, but as long as you don't keep it for like a year or something :p

My main issue with that is that the sound is terrible. The only way to get anything decent sounding with YouTube is to download the HD MP4 video, transcode it to FLAC with VLC, made edits in Audacity, and then encode as a 320kbps CBR or V0 VBR MP3. I mean, seriously.Uh... youtube-mp3 has an awesome quality.
youtube-mp3.org uses 128kbps mp3. That might be acceptable for some people, but I generally cannot listen to mp3s of that low quality
Agreed.

Should I try to convince my friend to stop pirating? He's downloaded several Adobe products, games, and even 'pirated' windows (He got a serial key online or something). I mean, what if he gets caught?
Definitely!
Anyway, I think the only way pirating would be okay is if you already have the program/game/whatever and you just want a backup.

Almost half of all windows XP computers in use today are pirated. How sad is that?

Source? I may have a technically illegal copy of XP Pro, but I feel that it is well within my rights. My computer with that on it is from 2003, and a few years ago the hard drive failed. My computer teacher gave me a replacement hard drive and let me use his disk and serial for XP pro, and gave me a burnt disk so I could install it again. (I have been back and forth between windows and Linux) I think that is perfectly within my rights, I have an XP license sticker right on the bottom of the laptop (though heat and wear has made it illegible) so I have the right to get XP back on the computer.

I have it legal B)
well my computer was from a hospital so I really hope so

I don't see Windows 7 worth spending the money on, I use it because it's popular therefore most things are made for it.
As for games I mostly pirate them because I don't want to spend 50$ on a game because the reviews are good to find out that it's terrible, if I like it I'll spend the money, if not I can sit there and feel good that I didn't waste money.

P.S. I like your sig!Why would I turn him in!?!?!
Like I said, it's the right thing to do. It's of course your decision, but pirating is against the law, something we're trying to stop. Let him keep doing it, and that's one more that got away, and the problem stays longer.
Right except if you don't do it, you're guilty for what he does after this partially.

I thought xp was free though. Does it really matter if you pirate free software?

Dude, just because something is outdated doesn't mean it's free. Is Microsoft going to sue over a 10 year old OS? Probably not, but it's not technically 'legal'

If you've already bought it, pirate it all you want. Get as many copies as you'd like, install as many patches as your whims commands you. Don't give it to your friends or anything, but pirate it for yourself if you've already bought it.
