compact discs

I wanted to know, does anyone even listen to CDs anymore? I like listening to my Beatles CDs at home and that's really nice, but I wanted to know if anyone else even listens to CDs, especially with low quality MP3s being the norm nowadays.

Re: compact discs

Sometimes I burn my songs from iTunes to a CD so I can blast music on the CD thing.

I use my iPod in my room cuz I have an iDock thing.

Re: compact discs

I mostly use my iPod. All the songs on my iPod are imported from CDs (except stuff like Nyan Cat and The DERP Song  tongue ).

Re: compact discs

I don't listen to CDs anymore, but not just because they're old. We (our family) still listen to some CDs in our car (Radiohead's The Bends, some collaboration between Metallica and an orchestra, a few more) but other than that, I go where the supply of music is. My parents use a thing called Rhapsody, a music streaming service, so I use it too. It's free to me (parents pay to use it themselves, I get a free ride), whereas I have no source of money and can't really afford to buy albums just for "nostalgia's sake." Also, even though these songs are on my iPad, it still is more convenient than a CD player and a case full of extra CDs. I can hold so many more songs on my iPad than I could on CDs. I have about 23 albums currently, and that is full album, not just a single song. That doesn't include singles, which would take up an entire CD, and doesn't count the albums which I do not have every single song, (28 more CDs)
It really isn't a difficult choice to make, I can carry an electronic device with all my music (under 2GB holds my music, I can fit a lot more) , or I can carry a CD player and 50 albums.

Quality of sound is a big factor though. MP3s don't have as good of a sound as a CD does (and in turn not as good as vinyl)

I don't actually think they're technically MP3s, I think they're WMA or AAC format. Still, as a person who hasn't ever really cared much about audio quality, I think that my in-ear headphones are good enough paired with my iPad. I've never truly known anything besides digital formats, so I'm just not used to better quality music, so it isn't really important to me.

Re: compact discs

I have a ton of CDs (like over 200), and no.

The main reason for this is I actually don't have a CD player in my room; my siblings have taken them for one reason or another (usually listening to audiobooks  roll ) and they're like "well you have your computer".-

And I do. I rip CDs, generally in MP3 320kbps but occasionally FLAC for special things. While I can hear some difference between these MP3s and the lossless files (especially on the extremely bright oM stuff... ugh), I think it's good enough for me. It also allows me to scrobble to last.fm. A lot of the CDs are sucky quality anyway because either they were poorly mastered (Boys Don't Cry) or just recorded poorly by drunk musicians (Alien Lanes) [I love both those albums anyway]

but uh yeah

Re: compact discs

Technically though, CDs are supposed to have better sound quality than any other standardised medium of music, even vinyl.

no
well, sort of
cds are always 44.1/16, whereas vinyl can range depending on the master
and also vinyl usually sounds a lot warmer than a cd
plus vinyl is usually mastered way better and quieter with less clipping than cds, especially these days

I do. Mostly for classical music or meditation music, though.  smile

I guess CDs sample rates are a little too low.

Re: compact discs

They make excellent throwing stars.

My dad still listens to CDs (and cassette tapes, but they're mostly more like mix tapes of miscellaneous opera stuff)

There's something about the CD that seems natural; much more so than an MP3 player.

I enjoy buying CDs because it gives the little booklet, and I just enjoy having them around, although the only CD i have is In Utero
