Captain Underpants was the first book series I've ever read. And one of the most awesome. (I do think it's a bit late for a new book though. The last one was in 2005.)

This book is based on a super hero that Dav Pilkey invented way back in 1973 when he was a second grader. The comics that Dav made were very much like the comic book that George and Harold sell on the playground in Chapter 3. -from the Dav Pilkey website

The only time I ever even looked at two or three pages of those books was in fourth or fifth grade, and even then I thought it was incredibly immature.
