You can totally use it on Windows/DOS. It's useful for testing connection lag, testing whether you have a connection at all, and I often use it for getting the IPs of sites.

Lol Nobody wants to use iTunes to share what they listen to, they use it to buy music.
To be completely clear, this is how ping works:
A packet of small data is sent to the server.
The server sends another packet back to your computer.
The time in milliseconds is your "ping"
This is usually repeated about 10 times, and the final result is the average.

Well, it really depends on the server. A closer server will be faster, but even if it's bogged down by requests it'll be slow.
