Notifications pop up on the side
I can't make a mockup right now, but sort of like Facebook.
If you're online when you get a message/comment/gallery add/etc. it'll show up in the bottom left corner, like when you're on Facebook. You can turn this off in your setting, or make it custom (like only show comments, favs, etc), all, or none.
This would be great for people who are tired of refreshing to get a message.

some people like to leave their webpages open, so if the notifications self-updated, it could cause problems.
I agree that notifications should update more quickly, as of now, they take ~5 minutes.
If you go here and login, you can see that there is a button for notifications. If you do have any, it should show a number on that button.
