PG now is pretty much code for made for kids but a character might die. PG used to be made for somewhat more mature audiences, and be able to carry more objectionable content, before the creation of a PG-13 rating. This is why you have Indiana Jones at PG for its movies, technically having the same score as Up!.
Because PG used to be considered a more mature rating, E.T. slipped in an inappropriate line so people would take it more serious than a G movie."IT WAS NOTHING LIKE THAT, [insert word for male genitalia here] BREATH!"
That line made the movie PG. That and a few bad words scattered here and there.
It's also funny how a LOT of 80s and 70s movie are PG when they really should be PG-13. I know that the rating wasn't invented yet at the time, but still, the MPAA should rerate movies like Raiders of the Lost Ark, Jaws, and Ghostbusters to PG-13. I mean, Ghostbusters is a total PG-13 movie, yet it's still PG. Don't get me wrong though, I love that movie.
Anyways guys, this topic isn't exactly for why movies are rated what they are. It's about subtle humor that goes over kid's heads,Ratings are relevant to the subject at hand.
And you mention Raiders but not Temple of Doom? The one where they RIP HUMAN HEARTS OUT while the victim is alive?
I only saw the 1st Indiana Jones, but I agree that should be PG13 (if it was'nt already).

Yeah, Temple of Doom, I know, but you know what I mean. Actually, I really hated that one. First off, WAYYYY too many Indian stereotypes. -.-

MLP actually has some adult humor.
In "The Super Speedy Cider Squeezy 6000" at the start, Fluttershy is napping. Rainbow Dash takes the blanket of her, showing Fluttershy standing up, and she blushes.
Anyone get the joke? Don't tell me i'm the only one who got that....

I seriously do not get that.
And something tells me that's a good thing.

Because she's naked, it was an obvious joke.
One I like from MLP which isn't really rude or adultish in any way but something adults are more likely to get is that in once scene Twlight wants to speak to everyone so she stands on a soapbox, can't remember the episode though.

The movies are made to invoke the sort of adventure serials from a long time ago. They were probably using stereotypes from their old sources. (The 4th movie is based on 50s sci-fi B movies and not serials, however)

She also crosses her arms over her chest. It was pretty obvious...
It also has an I Love Lucy chocolate scene thing. So, yeah. Things like that happen.

lol at the fluttershy scene.
*knock*
Fluttershy: Who could that be? Its still dark.
*Windows explodes* (no, not really)
Rainbow Dash: Get up fluttershy! Cider season is about to start!
*Quilt/blanket falls to bed, fluttershy blushes*.
Oh, and the toilet humor in the last roundup.

It' just so much happier
I can't really explain
It's just happy
It helps that it also has a nice narrative
But its main draw is happiness

Yes, I find this mildly funny.
As to what cheddargirl was saying:
It's interesting when I watch movies from the 80s to 90s, because we'll see a movie rated PG and think it's good for the whole family to watch. But usually it has a lot of right out language or imagery. Which I'm fine with, but not for a 4 year old.
But then I think, PG stands for Parental Guidance. That actually makes since. Nowadays, PG pretty much means 'for kids' from what I've seen. Rarely do you see a G rated movie. But back in the day, they actually used the ratings correctly.
I don't know. Just an observation. :3

I did see, quite literally, two seconds of it once. I observed that... it... uh... has nice animation? Yeah, it kind of does.
But really, there are less girly things that are pleasant. Like octonauts.
