I was just wandering what it is to be a 'new scratch' vs a 'scratcher' I started out (like everyone else) as a new scratcher, then one day about three months ago I became a scratcher. How and why does this happen? What are the benefits?

New Scratchers must wait 180 seconds between posts, whilst Scratchers only have to wait 60 seconds
Scratchers can also have a signature which is a bit of text or an image that displays under each of your posts (go to Profile>Personality to set your signature)
That's pretty much it, unless I've forgotten something

Scratchers can apply for Curator, mod, etc.

And, Scratchers can post images and links to outside scratch.mit.edu.

You can apply for curator whilst being a New Scratcher. And I think you could, in theory, actually apply for Mod if you're a New Scratcher, but you need to have been registered for six months to apply, so it'd never happen

You can't become curator as a new scratcher. It's not in the OP, but another post.

I forget, but it's in kayybee's guide, which Lightnin even linked to.

Go to profile in the bar near the top, directly under where it say Scratch Forums. When there, select Personality from the bar on your left, then type what you want in the box, and hit submit.
