You need to have the Java Runtime Environment installed on your computer. You can go to: http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp and click the "Verify Installation" button to see if you need to install Java.
If not, you can get it here: http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp
Firefox is a nice browser that works across platforms. We have tested the website in Microsoft Internet Explorer, Opera and Safari.

I'm having the same issue. I am using a Mac with sys 10.4.9. Java verifies and when I try to download the version it tells me my version is newer. Firefox, Safari and Opera will not play the project in the browser.
Help... I want to use this with my Multimedia class in the Fall.

If you're using a Mac, you should update your Java using Software Update from Apple, not java.com. Java is installed by default, so you shouldn't have any problems.
I current have Java 1.4.2 active, though Java 1.5 is also installed. You can see what you have installed and/or active by using Applications/Utilities/Java/J2SE 50/Java Preferences. I'm using the old one because I'm a Java developer.
Scratch Team, is there any versions of Java that are preferred and/or tested?

Scratch Projects are played on the site through a Java Applet. This requires your browser to have a Java Plugin installed (versions as old a 1.3 or anything more recent should work).
To test to see if Java is working on your browser, try out the demo applets provided by Sun:
http://java.sun.com/applets/jdk/1.3/index.html
If the demo applets run fine, but Scratch Projects do not run in your browser then please let us know here, or by email. Be sure to include the version of your Java Plugin (it will be displayed for you when you verify your java installation at the link andresmh gave:

Hi,
Am having problems with the viewing of the scratch projects. This problem never occured a month ago when i first took interest in scratch. i joined 5 minutes ago to ask for help. By the way i have already downloaded scratch and i am trying to learn how to make projects.
I tested the demo version of Java Applet, and it ran perfectly. But when i tried to run a scratch project, i got a java sign but then the screen went blank where the scratch project was supposed to be! I am running out of patience!!!
You asked for the version of the java plugin i am using (above message), and here it is:
Version 6 Update 2. By the way it said 'Congratulations! you have the recommended java installed'.
I HOPE YOU CAN TELL ME WHAT THE PROBLEM IS!!! ^_^
thnx

PS. I would really appreciate it if you replied in a week after the posting of this message!!!
PSS. What age group did you design 'scratch' for. I am 15 yrs old. Just curious, even though i know anyone can use it!

Did you try rebooting your machine? Also, what browser are you using? Someone told me that in Internet Explorer 7 you are supposed to click on the applet once it loads.

That's strange. What version do you have? Also, I'd recommend Firefox as your browser. It's free.

Ultrajam, do you have additional security/virus protection software on your machine that might be overriding your browser's settings? For some types of changes you will have to restart your browser for them to take effect.

There's a refresh problem when I view my daughter's project on one of my computers. It's running Firefox on Windows XP with the Java Plug-in 1.6.0_11. The Java test applets all seem to run fine. Her project runs fine on Firefox on my Windows Vista machine and on my Mac, but on the XP machine, the top right square inch of the animation shows the wrong portion of the image (I have a screen shot, but couldn't figure out how to include it here). Any thoughts on how to fix this problem?
Thanks!

It will load eventually. My recommendation is leave the computer and go watch T.V. and in 30 minutes check it.
