Becoming A Moderator

Scratch has set me off on the road of programming, which is the career I hope to go into. Scratch has set out my life in the way I want and has been my life for the past few months. It has given me all that I hoped to gain from it and so much more. So much that I feel that it is my duty to give something back to the community so I am asking if I can become a moderator. I understand the responsibilities involved but I feel that I am ready. I am a new-ish user so if I need to wait a bit longer then I understand. Thank-you.

Re: Becoming A Moderator

The moderator elections happen every few months. By the way, one rule that always comes up with a discussion is that you have to be 14 (or maybe it's 13).

im pretty sure you'd need years of experience to become a mod. lots of the community moderators joined 4-5 years ago and only now became mods

I actually used to have a different account (it's kind of embarrassing, I was 9--I'm 13 now). On that account, I joined 4 years ago. On this account, I joined just a day over a year ago (amazing huh). So I'm sort of a Scratch oldie. Does 4 years on a different account count? Lol. If you want, I can prove it to you.

Re: Becoming A Moderator

I will be 13 this month so that is not an issue. Also, I have seen a moderator with less than 100 posts before.

PS: When are the next moderator elections?

That is EXACTLY what I'm wondering.
Also, where do I post my speech or whatever you have to do to run for Mod?

That was probably part of the Scratch Team, who develop Scratch (apart from Paddle2See and cheddargirl).

At the moment we don't know-could be next year, could be next week.

There'll be a thread in Announcements called 'Mod Elections' something or other

Well, don't the current mods only be mods for 4 months and then a new election starts? When was the last election?

Nope, every four months the current moderators and the Scratch Team get together and discuss who is ready to retire and who wants to stay. For the most part, usually only 1-3 moderators retire each term. If they feel they need more moderators, they'll have an election after the check-in.

Good news, however: this month is check-in month, which could lead to an election this month.

Re: Becoming A Moderator

I believe the rules are 14, not 13. I could check again, but I don't feel like doing that right now.  tongue  Anyway, If they need more mods, they will post a new topic in announcements announcing they need more mods, and inviting people to write a nomination speech. After a deadline, the speeches are evaluated, and the ST chooses some of them to run. They then announce the elections as open, and people vote. It's pretty much a popularity contest after the ST chooses the nominees, so you've got to be well known to have a chance. That's how it operated about 4 months ago, at the last election. If any mods retire, or the load is too great for the currnt mods, they'll do this. Unless a mod retires this month, I don't think they will have an election, since they seem to be doing fine with the team they have.

No, it's thirteen, I'm sure of it.

And at least one moderator will be retiring.

There are moderator elections every once in a while (Don't know when they occur.)
I just hope you know that being a Moderator is a lot of work, and you would have to be online as much as you can.

Re: Becoming A Moderator

The mod checkin is going on right now, and i know i plan to stay, but i still have to send the official email.  tongue

If one mod retires, we probably won't have another election. After the 3 hired in April (Sparks, Lucario, and myself), we can probably get on for at least another 4 months.  smile
Anyhow, in order to become a moderator, you must be at least 13 years of age and have your parents' permission. You must also have had the Scratch account you are running from for at least 6 months. If you fulfill the requirements, you can post a speech on the thread that will be opened in Announcements. The Scratch Team will go through the nominees and announce the candidates. Last time, we got 1 day to campaign before the vote. The vote was for 12 hours (but some people were pushing for 24). After that, they counted the votes, and made sure that none were cheating, and the winners were announced. The winners were asked to have their parents email the Team to arrange a phone call. (In the case of a legal adult, they'll call you directly.) Your parents will confirm your age, and their permission. A couple days later, they let you in.
Don't count on another election for a while though. As i said, even if someone retires, we should be OK.

I expect coolstuff and Harakou to retire. That being, I think there may be a possibility of another election.

Harakou has been mod for only a little while, so there's not much of a chance of him retiring.
