subscribe to topics
their should be an option to subscribe to a topic so that you get emails when it receives comments

I don't support, it would clutter up the server, don't you think? And I think you mean "Messages".

From looking at the forum admin screens, I can see it is an option, so it was probably disabled for a reason. That reason was probably, like mentioned above, that it would slow down the server greatly.

Yep. The forum feature put stress on the server (Paddle describes it here as the server having gas pains 
), so it got disabled.
It isn't a bad idea, though, but the trick is finding a way to get it to work properly without giving the server a bad case of indigestion (pun totally intended).
Everything is better when you add a little cheddar, because when you have cheese your life is at ease
