universal apps

While I was making apps for several os's the idea came to me:why aren't there universal apps?
It would require only one variable (and list)in the os,and the app could be released for different os's at the same time.
The idea:the app would read the variable(or list) and identify the os it was running on and execute the appropriate code.
The benefits largely outweigh the disadvantages,so I think that universal apps are a good thing.
And finally, sometimes universal apps can run on non supporting os's(!)

NOTE:the variable's name needs to be agreed upon,so can you please leave a comment to suggest one ?

NOTE TO OS MAKERS:please let me know if you update your os to support universal apps.

Re: universal apps

Sounds cool!  So we could basically call the app open source, right?

Re: universal apps

Good idea, but for scratch, only lists work on imported apps for some reason... at least on my computer

so I guess that there also needs to be a list called "os".
