Has anyone heard of this?

I'm not sure where exactly this belongs, but I was PLAYING a game when this person called, alledgedly from Microsoft. I instantly knew this was a scam. Fail.

They asked to speak to the owner of my computer, claiming that it had serious viruses. I asked who they were and where they were calling from. They didn't answer and again asked to speak to the owner of the computer. I asked them how they knew the computer had a virus. Not letting them answer, I told them they must be hackers ( wink ) and that I would report them to the police, as I had an advanced call tracker and that I knew exactly where they were calling from. They kept talking, saying, "If you go into blah blah blah...download this". I told them, "tell me the serial number of my computer. Now. 5...4...3...2...1...Goodbye." And then I hung up.

Has anyone ever had an experience like this? What's the funniest experience you've had with a telemarketer?

THE'YRE AFTER ME! SELF DESTRUCT!! *play a klaxon and boom sounds, then hang up*"

Re: Has anyone heard of this?

my grandfather lived in an apartment, and he got a call from a telemarketer
asking if he wanted to buy any new window replacements
and he said sure!
the telemarketer asked him about how many square feet he would need
and he said 'about 2500'
because of the entire building
the telemarketer hung up

Whenever telemarketers called (this was about 4 years ago, I was 8) my brother would laugh maniacally into the phone and hang up. (Once one of them called back and laughed maniacally too, but that's another story.) I thought it was hilarious and started doing it whenever telemarketers called
Anyway, some random number popped up on the phone with one of those weird Caller IDs like telemarketers have, and I picked up, laughed as scarily and loudly as possible, and hung up.
They called back, started talking in a businesslike voice. I cut them off with high-pitched laughter.
They called a third time and yes, I did it again
The fourth time I paused, wondering what the heck they kept calling for
Turns out it was like one of my parents' acquaintances, calling from the bank. Me and my brother never laughed demonically into the phone after that...

My brother and I used to laugh maniacally into the phone at salespeopletelemarketers and one of them called back and imitated the laugh
That must have been awkward in the office

Re: Has anyone heard of this?

My dad did something like that.

Person: Hello, I'm from Microsoft and I am calling to report a virus on your computer.
Dad: I have several computers, which one?
Person: The one you used last.
Dad: But I'm using two right now.
Person: It's the one running windows xp.
Dad: All of them are. (none of them actually are)
Person: Oh, well it's the computer you bought first.
Dad: I bought my first computer in 1982 and got rid of it in 1991.
Person: Oh... it's the one you bought first that you still have.
Dad: Does your mother know you do this?
Person: *hangs up*

Re: Has anyone heard of this?

Yes. Telemarketing is so annoying. Or surveys.

Me: hello?
someone: Goodmorning. I am blablabla. May I ask you some questions?
Me: Sorry, I'm not interested.
someone: "Do you smoke?"
Me: That does not concern you.
someone: But why don't you want to answer? I just want to know if you smoke. We are making surveys for blablabla.
Me: I am not interested.
someone: But I don't understand why you -
Me: Goodbye.

The worst surveys are those who ask how much money you have or you gain or which religion you have.

Re: Has anyone heard of this?

I think it's a breach of privacy to be honest, people may see it as rude when I do this but as soon as I get that they're a telemarketer (if they don't say anything when you pick up the phone and only speak 4 seconds after you say something then it's a machine) I just hang up.

Sometimes I feel like messing with them, but other times I just can't be bothered, they call way too often and if I ignore the phone it could be a legitimate call.

Re: Has anyone heard of this?

We used to get this credit card scam where the recording said, "Do YOU own a small dog?"
We never answered.
According to Dad, if you said yes they could use it as proof that you said yes to letting them use your credit card.

Re: Has anyone heard of this?

I've received calls from "Microsoft Windows Support" coming from some guy in India who claims that his name is "Clinton"
The last time they called, I took the phone and talked to them.
This is pretty much how it went:

Clinton: HELLO I AM CLINTON FROM MICROSOFT WINDOWS SUPPORT!

Me: Yes, hello, I am the IT person of this residence.

Clinton: YOUR WINDOWS COMPUTER HAS BEEN SENDING US ERRORS

Me: What if I told you that we run a Mac here? What would you say about that?

Clinton: OH YOU HAS AN APPLE MAC??
WAIT ONE SECOND...
(he says something in hindi to someone in the background, probably asking him what to say)

Me: The Apple Mac is a computer from like 20 years ago... but yes, I have an iMac.

Clinton: BUT OUR RECORDS SAY YOU HAVE A WINDOWS COMPUTER

Me: Well your records are wrong. And thanks for the offer, but our windows are clean and don't need to be washed.

Clinton: *ragequit*

I shut him up  smile

They wanted to know what charities I supported. I expect they were going to sell those charities my personal information. Had I told them, I would have had charity after charity chasing after me.
