problem uploading music

whenever i try to upload my own music, a notice comes up that says "unsupported AIFF file compression format". what does that mean?

That means the sound file you're trying to open is in a format unsupported by Scratch. You can open the sound file in a sound editor (if you don't have one, download this one: http://www.download.com/Audacity/3000-2170_4-10606824.html?tag=lst-1) and convert into a supportable format (for example, wav).
