Microphone Help!

I've recently got a Philips SBC MDI 140 microphone and I'm having some problems with various recording aspects. I speak loud and clear but my voice is quiet, and when I speak loud close to the microphone, my voice is distorted.

I tried using Audacity to correct the microphone, but when I raise the volume, the noise removal has done nothing. How can I correct my voice using Audacity or something built into Windows Vista?

There are a few settings in the Sound control panel built into Windows.

I tried those but they either do nothing or they make everything worse in some way.
