project theft

what happens if someone steals one of your Scratch projects or images from it, codes/translates it in a different programming language, and uploads and claims it as their own on a different website?

Re: project theft

Then they have plagiarized you, which is three sins at once: lying, cheating, and stealing. And sadly, some people just don't care to do three things that break the "common sense" rule in life just for their personal gain. It's sad. I recently had one of my projects plagiarized, and it's very frustrating.

Re: project theft

When you put a project up onto the scratch website, it's fair game. Anyone can use what they want with it. If you don't want people looking/taking stuff from it, don't put it up onto the Scratch Website in the first place. I remember seeing somewhere putting a scratch project onto a different website without uploading it, do that if you care that much.

Yes they are. It's expected not required.
And here's the topic about uploading projects to a different website

Re: project theft

Scratchers like to look at games and remake them in Scratch. Yet that isn't counted as thievery here (unless, of course, you happen to be a company like Namco-Bandai).

What makes this case tricky is the degree to the ownership. Sure, the project started off on Scratch, but the person who remade the game took the effort to remake the game in another language, which is not easy. You could ask the remake owner to give credit if it's based on your game, but that's about it.

One a side note, if you're one of those people who are very uncomfortable with other people using your creation, then it's best not to upload them anywhere at all (Scratch, deviantART, Newgrounds, etc.). Anytime something is posted online, anyone can see it and derive a new creation off of it.

Re: project theft

You can eat the cakes as well as copy other people's recipes to make your own, maybe with different ingredients. This freedom comes with two simple requirements:
*share your cakes along with the recipes
*give credit to those who inspired you
