This isn't about what your definition of metal is, it's about what the first metal song was. Sure, a personal definition of metal plays into the decision, but I'm not exactly sure how a recent metal artist like Avenged Sevenfold or that you like metal is relevant unless you believe that to be the first "metal".

Yeah. The first stage were songs like You Really Got Me Going by the Kinks, And Helter Skelter by the Beatles (it's ok if i miss a few things) Second stage is like Mettalica, Iron Maiden, and a few other bands.

@Anime - I don't know, that's a big leap in eras between the second and third stage. The second stage, or the early days of traditional heavy metal (Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Steppenwolf, Iron Butterfly, Jimi Hendrix, "Helter Skelter", etc.) sort of died down in the mid-70s a bit. Then, in the late 70's, with a new generation of musicians revitalizing arena rock, metal was brought back into the mainstream, thus starting the third stage, starting with bands such as Van Halen and Motley Crue which would transition into the glam metal era of the 80's. Then the fifth stage would probably be the birth of thrash and grunge with the bands you've mentioned - Metallica, Anthrax, Slayer, Nirvana, the reinvented Judas Priest, and Iron Maiden.

I guess I think You Really Got Me by the Kinks was the first, but I don't think it was the best metal song ever.

This thread has nothing to do with the best metal song ever. Perhaps that would be good for another topic?
