Will there be an option to use raster graphics in Scratch 2.0?

I don't quite know where this topic goes, so feel free to move it.

Anyway, so I've heard that Scratch 2.0 will have vector-based graphics and will have a vector-based paint editor, etc. Does this mean that the old paint editor will be removed from the program and we will HAVE to use vector graphics for all our projects?

The Idea of vector based graphics (In my opinion) is good for certain games, although I do hope we can also use the good old pixel graphics.

There was another topic like this...

Yes, raster graphics can be imported as objects into vector images.

I also agree. Using vector graphics to make 8-bit graphics will be hard.

yep i rely on pixel art for graphics so sprites will be harder to make for me.

Re: Will there be an option to use raster graphics in Scratch 2.0?

There are paint editors, including Scratch's own, that can make pixel-y graphics that can be imported to 2.0.

I would suggest using Scratch 1.4 to make your sprite, export the sprite, then import it into 2.0.

that get to be a bit tedious over time

You would be able to import raster images into Scratch, so having raster images wouldn't be a problem.

As for the paint editor, it's hard to say since it is still a work in progress. Some of Scratch Team members are worried that the vector paint editor would be pretty hard to grasp for younger users (yours truly is one of them  tongue ), so there's been some debate as to how the paint editor interface would be like.

personally I think it the vector editor isn't that great of an idea

the concept of vector editing it completely alien to me and probably many others, I think scratch's paint editors should be as close to normal hand-drawing as possible because many new users have never drawn with a computer mouse at all

So you're saying the old paint editor will be removed entirely?
I'd much prefer if there could be an option to use either, but whatever.

Yes, the old paint editor will be removed and replaced with a new one. But how the new editor will operate is another story. Best favorable solution would be a vector editor that has the look and feel of a raster editor, but since the final design of the editor is still being discussed.

A vector editor with the tools of a bitmap editor would be a dream machine  tongue
