Yes, but there are an incredible number of supporters...until the Scratch Team acknowledges the idea and its support, and tells us whether or not they will consider the idea, letting it die would waste that support.

Re: New Scratchers Necropost Restriction

Support, but I think a topic should be auto closed/deleted after no one comments for say a month anyway

Re: New Scratchers Necropost Restriction

I just realized a potential problem with this.
If, for example, a new scratcher posts a topic that is a duplicate of an old one, and gets closed and directed to the new one, they won't be able to post in it unless someone else does first.

That is a bit of a drawback, but I believe the benefits outweigh it.

Thanks to the new supporters!   smile

Re: New Scratchers Necropost Restriction

Nice work getting support for this idea! - but I'm sorry to say that I do not agree with it as it is currently written.

First, I don't agree with your definition of a necropost.  A post can be very old - yet still relevant.  Particularly in the Bugs and Glitches area, where a strange situation may cause an error message that only shows up for a very few users at rare intervals.  A post is only a necropost when the topic is no longer relevant - and I'm not sure you can automate when that happens.  I don't think we want anybody who is looking for help blocked from posting on the forums - that would be a failure in it's primary function.  So if there are going to be restrictions placed on posting, we would probably want to only apply them in certain non-essential forum areas, such as the Things I'm ...  sections.

Secondly, there are no current features in the forum software that would let us put your proposal in use.  So, they would have to be custom coded.  I don't think the problem is bad enough that we want to dedicate resources to it right now - even if we could come to an agreement about how it should be implemented.

I do think that there will come a time, after the transition to Scratch 2.0, when it will make more sense to address this.  But it's not terribly high on our priorities at the moment.

This isn't blocking their use of the forums.  At worst, this just adds a few new threads--they can still get help, and the forums can still serve their function.

That's understandable.  This isn't an immediate issue--but I do think it is something that ought to be considered in the future.
