Well, yeah the first games weren't that bad. But the new 3D ones make me wonder why people even compare them.

Mario. Sonic hasn't had a great run recently. The games ARE getting better though.

Should I explain how reading before jumping to conclusions works.

"quality" may be understood differently than "gameplay" and under game quality it says "Both have had their highs and lows, but I think that Mario wins this, and on average critics would agree as well." which doesnt actually say anything about gameplay

But fun is the primary judgement of game quality.

A better topic would be SNES vs Genesis. However, Imma go with Mario for this one.

and how exactly would that be apparent to other people who may or may not interpret different things different ways

Just to add my two cents here - I have to agree.  When I hear the word "Quality" many things come to mind - but gameplay is not necessarily the first.  There's artistic quality, storyline quality, coding quality, etc.  Perhaps you could just acknowledge that at least three people reading your comparison were confused by your word choice.  That's a pretty good indication that there might be room for improvement there
