What do you think?
I like Mario better, almost all his games are great.
I like Sonics early games, but he has a HORRIBLE fandom and tons of bad games.

Well, yeah the first games weren't that bad. But the new 3D ones make me wonder why people even compare them.

I'll do a comparison:
Motives- Mario wins this. He will stop at nothing to save Peach. Sonic's motives just aren't near as good.
Personality- Sonic wins this. Sonic is cocky and arrogant, which can be amusing. Mario doesn't really have anything.
Apperance- Mario wins this. He has a trademark appearance; red hat, mustache, and overalls. Sonic usually just goes nude.
Abilities- Neither have much abilities on their own without power-ups. However, Mario has more power-ups than Sonic, making him win this category.
Style- Sonic wins this. He has lots of style when he's running really fast (especially in the 3D games that do use speed well). He also does really cool jumps.
Game Quality- Both have had their highs and lows, but I think that Mario wins this, and on average critics would agree as well.
Overall: Mario has 4, Sonic has 2. Mario's better.

It's a platforming game. You don't need a personality.

I'm more of a Mario guy, but Sonic has some AWESOME games. (Sonic CD, Sonic Colors, Sonic Adventure)

Mario. Sonic hasn't had a great run recently. The games ARE getting better though.

You forgot a game-play category. Which one is actually fun?

AHEM... game quality was a category.
Should I explain how reading before jumping to conclusions works.

"quality" may be understood differently than "gameplay" and under game quality it says "Both have had their highs and lows, but I think that Mario wins this, and on average critics would agree as well." which doesnt actually say anything about gameplay

But fun is the primary judgement of game quality.

and how exactly would that be apparent to other people who may or may not interpret different things different ways

A better topic would be SNES vs Genesis. However, Imma go with Mario for this one.

Hasn't the AVGN been doing that lately?
He just posted part 2 of that video, but I'm talking about a Scratch topic. On second thought, I'm going to post one in a little bit.

Just to add my two cents here - I have to agree. When I hear the word "Quality" many things come to mind - but gameplay is not necessarily the first. There's artistic quality, storyline quality, coding quality, etc. Perhaps you could just acknowledge that at least three people reading your comparison were confused by your word choice. That's a pretty good indication that there might be room for improvement there
